Charlie Lyon (Marquette) and Orange County SC had a great start to their USL season Saturday night, blanking Reno 1868 FC 2-0 in Nevada.

Lyon, who turns 25 next month, stopped all three shots he faced to record the shutout in his Orange County debut.

The goalkeeper signed with the club last month after spending the past two seasons under contract with Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders; Lyon made 41 appearances for the club's reserve team, Seattle Sounders 2, in USL in 2015 and '16.

  • Genevieve Richard (UW) started her third season with Japanese club Nojima Stella Kanagawa Sagamihara on Saturday, as the club dropped a 3-0 decision to INAC Kobe Leonessa in its debut in the top-flight Nadeshiko League Division 1. Richard, 24, allowed just six goals in 15 appearances last season as Nojima Stella went unbeaten to win the Division 2 title and earn promotion.
  • Midfielder Laurie Bell (UW-Milwaukee) started as Karlslunds IF HFK and local rivals Örebro Syrianska IF drew 1-1 in a 2017-18 Swedish Cup qualifier Thursday. The teams each went 1-0-1 in their three-team group, with Karlslunds finishing top thanks to a plus-3 goal differential compared to Syrianska's plus-2, and both joined Rynninge IK and IFK Kumla in advancing to the district semifinals – those games will be played in April or May. The match between the Örebro clubs was played at Karlslund Arena, but Karlslunds was the visiting team because Syrianska is playing its home matches at the stadium this season. Bell and Karlslunds open their Division 2 Norra Svealand season April 9 at BK Forward. On Twitter: @LBellBell
  • Striker Andrija Novakovich (Muskego) and the Reading Under-23 team were drawn away to Newcastle United for the Premier League Cup quarterfinals. The 20-year-old Novakovich has four goals in six appearances in the competition this season heading into Monday's match. On Twitter: @AndrijaNovakov3
  • The Sunderland Under-23 team will play at fellow English side Norwich City in a Premier League International Cup semifinal Thursday, but Black Cats defender Sam Brotherton (UW) might miss the match at Carrow Road – the 20-year-old is with the New Zealand national team for its third-round Oceania World Cup qualifiers. The All Whites play host to Fiji on Tuesday in Wellington, needing one point to earn a spot in the regional final. The Sunderland-Norwich winner advances to face FC Porto in the International Cup final; the Portuguese side knocked off Swansea City 1-0 in the other semifinal Saturday. On Twitter: @SamBrotherton96
