The fall version of the Wisconsin State Championships, better known as the State Cup, expands to six divisions this fall.

Group play in the Under-14 through Under-19 divisions is scheduled for Oct. 15, 16 and 22, with the semifinals Oct. 23 and finals between Oct. 25 and 28. All fall State Cup matches will be played at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

While the rest of the State Championships are contested in the spring, with group play over Memorial Day weekend, divisions that involve high school-aged girls have traditionally been played in the fall to avoid conflicts with the WIAA prep girls season in the spring.

In recent years, that has meant four divisions of fall play for the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association event: Under-15 through Under-18. However, with age groups changing to birth year this season, the Under-19 age group and the Under-14 division were added to the fall lineup.

Several of the 88 teams earned their spots in the State Cup proper by winning play-in games over the past few weeks. The Under-14 through Under-17 divisions are 16-team fields, with the four group winners advancing to the semifinals. In Under-18 and Under-19, the three group winners and the top second-place finisher will play in the semifinals of the 12-team divisions. All finals are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

State champions earn berths in the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championships, which are June 23 to 28 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

  • Four State Cup sides are from NEW United, which likely is a new name to many state soccer fans. Appleton SC changed its name to North East Wisconsin United, shortened to NEW United. The switch acknowledges that the club, which was formed in 1981, draws players from both Appleton and the surrounding region.
  • U.S. Youth Soccer Region II recently announced its new committee assignments, which include seven Wisconsinites. Delavan's Jonathan Meersman, a longtime referee, was named chair of the Midwest Regional Championships committee, which also includes De Pere's Ann Maki. Oak Creek's Margaret Domka is part of the Referee Advisory group, Waukesha's Ken Ward is on the Budget and Finance committee, Racine's Nathan Thompkins is part of the Soccer Across America committee and both Veronica Andrew and Waukesha's Meghan Ward are members of the TOP Soccer committee for the region.
  • Goalkeeper Jack Morris (Eau Claire), who plays club soccer with the Minnesota Thunder Academy in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, was invited to a U.S. Soccer Federation Training Center on Oct. 12 in West St. Paul, Minn. It's Morris' second training center invitation, as he also attended one in May.
