The Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association recently announced this year's recipients of the organization's Mike Kabanica Scholarships, awarded annually to six graduating seniors in memory of the late Wisconsin Soccer Association president.

WYSA grants $500 scholarships to three boys and three girls for their commitment and excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Kabanica, a native of Serbia who emigrated to the U.S. in 1950, is a member of at least major three halls of fame: The WSA Hall of Fame in 1986; the National Soccer Hall of Fame, in the builder category in 1987; and the U.S. Adult Soccer Association Hall of Fame in 2006. He served the WSA president from 1972 until his death in 1997.

More than 100 graduating seniors from the Class of 2016 applied for this year's Kabanica Scholarships. Here are the six recipients:

Jake Clady, Croatian Eagles SC/Kenosha Indian Trail: Will attend the University of Wisconsin and plans to study chemical engineering, with an eventual goal of working for NASA or SpaceX.

Joshua Koleske, Appleton SC/Appleton North: Undecided on college choice, but plans to work in medicine, either in orthopedic surgery or neurosciences.

Joey Schauer, Croatian Eagles SC/Whitnall: Will attend Wright State in Dayton, Ohio, and plans to study mechanical engineering – following in his uncle's footsteps – in addition to playing soccer for the Raiders.

Emily Fisher, Pewaukee SC/Sussex Hamilton: Will attend UW, Indiana or Purdue, and plans to study psychology, law or pharmacy.

Gabrielle Rohrer, Strike FC Wisconsin/Oconomowoc: Will attend Wartburg (Iowa) and plans to major in engineering with minors in art and leadership. Her career goal is to combine her knowledge to build energy-efficient "green" houses.

Nicole Sanders, Madison 56ers/Sugar River (Belleville HS): Will attend Viterbo in La Crosse, and has been admitted into the school's nursing program in addition to playing soccer for the V-Hawks.
