National team news: Ricketts, Canada edge Guatemala in friendly

Hapoel Haifa striker Tosaint Ricketts (UW-Green Bay) got the start Friday as the Canadian national team blanked Guatemala 1-0 in a friendly in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for its first win of the year.

The 27-year-old Ricketts logged 57 minutes in his 36th cap, and saw his header in the 50th minute saved by Guatemalan goalkeeper Paulo Motta.

Canada will travel to Puerto Rico on Sunday ahead of a friendly in Bayamon on Monday.

  • Milwaukee Wave defender Victor Quiroz had an assist as Mexico routed El Salvador 12-0 on Thursday night in Tulsa, Okla., in the quarterfinals of the inaugural World Minifootball Federation World Cup. The Mexicans, who have outscored opponents 61-4 in winning all four of their matches, will face Brazil (4-0-0) in a semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Hoffman Estates, Ill., while the U.S. (4-0-0) takes on Romania (2-1-0) in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet at 5 p.m. Sunday for the title.
