State pro notes: Smyth scores in finale, helps Amazon Grimstad stay up

Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) closed out her professional soccer career in fine style Saturday, scoring one final goal and helping ensure Amazon Grimstad at least one more season in Norway's top women's league.

Smyth scored the opener in 29th minute and Amazon Grimstad went on to a 3-0 victory over host Sarpsborg 08 in the second leg of a promotion/relegation playoff series. The Toppserien side won the series 5-1 on aggregate.

It was the second straight year the teams met in the playoffs, after Amazon Grimstad finished 11th in the 12-league Toppserien and Sarpsborg 08 finished second in the second-tier 1. Division – Smyth scored the decisive goal in last year's series.

Amazon Grimstad won the first leg 2-1 this year, with a stoppage-time own goal providing the winning margin. Smyth's goal just before the half-hour mark, her fourth in 22 appearances in all competitions this year, pushed the visitors' advantage to 3-1 and Amazon Grimstad added goals in the 70th and 71st to seal the victory.

The 27-year-old Smyth announced earlier this month that she would retire following the season, her fifth in Norway. She finished her career with 21 goals for Donn Toppfotball and Amazon Grimstad. Smyth spoke with The Emerald Exiles website about her retirement (Read full article)

FCA 04 Darmstadt lost to VfB Ginsheim 4-2 in a Verbandsliga Hessen-Süd match Sunday in Germany. Darmstadt (7-4-5) gave up three goals in 4 minutes in the opening 20 minutes and saw its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped.
