One of the newest members of the U.S. Soccer Federation's Referee Committee is one of Wisconsin's most distinguished referees.

Delavan's Jonathan Meersman was appointed to the committee in May, accepting an invitation from the national federation.

The 16-member group typically meets twice per year to discuss referee-related issues, including policies and procedures, appointments of referees and assistant referees to the FIFA panel and the ongoing needs for instruction, assessment and assignment of the approximately 140,000 referees within the USSF.

The committee then makes recommendations on those topics to the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors.

Meersman has officiated more than 2,500 games since he started as a referee in 1988, began instructing in 1994, was named a state assessor in 2000 and was the Wisconsin Soccer Referee Development Program's Director of Instruction from 1999 to 2008.

He's been involved on the national level since 2010, when he became a National Referee Instructor, and has been an Education Resources Advisor to the National Referee Program since 2012 – in that role, he's helped oversee the content of referee training materials and is leading the creation of a new Grade 8 course and exam.

As the Region II Referee Administrator, Meersman also manages all referee-related activities for the annual U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championships, and is one of four members of the USYS Referee Committee.
