The 2014 prep boys soccer season kicks off Tuesday, and hopefully scoreboard operators across the state got the memo about the new length of matches.
WIAA games will consist of 45-minute halves this season – previously, halves were 40 minutes. And if a game is tied after those 90 minutes of play, it will be recorded as a draw, as overtime has been eliminated during the regular season.
The format changes are experimental rules the WIAA will use this season. Junior varsity and freshman matches will continue to use 40-minute halves, and the WIAA already had a policy in place prohibiting overtime in those games.
Another new twist will be seen in October when the WIAA tournament series begins.
Overtime will still be used in those matches, but teams will play two full 10-minute periods, regardless of scoring, before the possibility of penalty kicks. Since 1994, overtime in WIAA playoff play used the "golden goal" or "sudden victory" format.
