Senior Cara Walls (Wauwatosa East) scored in the opening 10 minutes and Genevieve Richard and Caitlyn Clem combined on the clean sheet as the University of Wisconsin shut out 15th-ranked Marquette 1-0 in a college women's exhibition match Thursday night at Valley Fields in Milwaukee.

Walls found the back of the net in the 8th minute for the Badgers, who have been without standouts Rose Lavelle and Kinley McNicoll during preseason – they are playing with the U.S. and host Canada in the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup.

Richard, a senior who was named the USL W-League Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season, played 68 minutes before redshirt freshman Clem finished up the shutout for UW.

Both teams open the regular season Friday: The Badgers will play host to Oregon at the McClimon Complex in Madison, while the Golden Eagles welcome Loyola (Ill.) to Valley Fields as part of the Marquette Invitational.

  • Freshmen Anna Smalley (Menomonee Falls) and Sydney Senn scored second-half goals as host UW-Milwaukee rallied past Drake 2-1 in an exhibition Tuesday night at Engelmann Stadium. Smalley finished off a feed from fellow freshman Aubrey Krahn (Waukesha North) for the 54th-minute equalizer, while Senn headed in a cross from sophomore Maria Stephans (Hartford) for the winner just more than 15 minutes later. The Panthers play their annual Alumni game today ahead of Friday's season opener against Tennessee at the McClimon Complex in Madison.
  • Kim Kriese (Stevens Point/Marian) was named women's coach at Lakeland, marking the first time in the program's 21-year history that the team has a full-time coach. The 25-year-old Kriese spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Muskies under Adam Galla, who oversaw the school's men's and women's teams – Galla will now be solely the men's coach at the Sheboygan school. Kriese holds the Marian school records for goals (66) and game-winning goals (18) and was named the Northern Athletics Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2011.
  • Morgan MacLean, an assistant for the men's and women's programs at St. Scholastica (Minn.) since 2005, was named UW-Superior women's coach. The Duluth native will lead the Yellowjackets in their final season in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference before they join the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference in fall 2015 – Superior has lost 142 straight league matches since 1996.
  • New UW-Green Bay women's coach Kacey Burke added a state native to her staff, hiring Ally Bales (New Berlin Eisenhower) as an assistant. Bales, who was a two-time All-American at NCAA Division II Dallas Baptist, was an assistant at Division III Defiance (Ohio) during the 2012 season and at Division II Anderson (S.C.) in 2013.
  • Jameson Kronser (Oregon/UW) was named goalkeeper coach for the men's and women's programs at NCAA Division III Beloit College.
  • Former University of Wisconsin men's assistant Ernie Yarborough was named men's coach at NCAA Division I Stetson in DeLand, Fla. He was part of coach Todd Yeagley's staff with the Badgers in 2009, then both moved to their alma mater, Indiana, after one season. Yarborough, a Florida native, also has coached at Alabama-Birmingham and Michigan during his 17-year career.
