For the third straight year, James Weber (Hartford) is in Sweden looking to help Gullringens GoIF keep its spot in the Division 3 Nordöstra Götaland.

Weber has helped the club stay in the fifth-tier league each of the past two seasons, scoring 19 goals in 24 appearances. He finished ninth in the league in scoring with 10 goals last season, despite playing in only 14 of a possible 22 matches.

However, Weber played the final few games of Gullringens' 2013 season with a knee injury – when he returned home, it was diagnosed as a torn ACL and he underwent surgery in October.

Gullringens (4-6-2) is in eighth place in the 12-team Division 3 Nordöstra Götaland with 10 matches remaining. The ninth-place side faces a relegation playoff, while the bottom three teams are relegated to the sixth division.

  • A newspaper named Ängelholms FF goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski (Marquette) the seventh-best player during the first half of the season in Sweden's second-tier Superettan. In its half-season player rankings, Aftonbladet called Pyzdrowski, who turns 28 on Aug. 17,  "easily the best keeper in the league" and noted that he had "won several points for his team by himself." • Keeper Ryan Onwukwe, who started his college career at UW-Parkside, ended it at UW-Milwaukee and played for the Madison 56ers in the National Premier Soccer League for the past three seasons, is headed to Germany to start his professional career. Onwukwe, who will turn 22 on Aug. 17, had one season of college eligibility left after sitting out at UWM last fall due to NCAA transfer rules but will instead join German sixth division club FCA Darmstadt on Aug. 12. "I've kind of bounced around a bit," said Onwukwe, who also spent a season at Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis. "I've really enjoyed Milwaukee – I like the coaching staff there, I like everything about it. ... But this opportunity came up and I decided to take advantage of it." Onwukwe's connection to the German club is Gregory Efiom, who was his teammate at IUPUI in 2012. Darmstadt is a city of 147,000 about a half-hour south of Frankfurt, and FCA Darmstadt (13-15-6) finished 10th in the Verbandsliga Hessen-Süd last season. "I'll just just see where it takes me, try to play my way up," said Onwukwe, who discussed his plans with 56ers general manager Cristian Brei – he is an agent and frequently works with players and clubs in Germany. "He said every six months, try to move up one league, make that your goal." On Twitter: @OnkBiggs
  • Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) continued his breakout season, scoring in the 84th minute Saturday night to give the Columbus Crew a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution in a Major League Soccer match in Foxborough, Mass. Finlay ran on to a ball from Justin Meram, got around defender Darrius Barnes and fired past Bobby Shuttleworth to send the Revolution to their eighth straight loss. It was Finlay's fifth goal of the season and of his MLS career, all in the past 10 games. On Twitter: @EthanFinlay13

  • After a few weeks on trial, defender Andrew Ribeiro (Green Bay Notre Dame) signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of USL PRO. "Andrew is a good, solid defender that can play either central or outside back for us," Riverhounds interim coach Niko Katic said in a news release. "We were pleased with his work rate, attitude, dedication and ability and think he'll be able to help us down the final stretch here." The 23-year-old Ribeiro had one assist in 24 appearances (18 starts) for the Harrisburg City Islanders in USL PRO last season, and signed with Chivas USA in January. He played all 180 minutes of the club's first two MLS Reserve League matches, but was released in April without appearing in a league game. The Riverhounds (5-11-5) are 13th in the 14-team league.
