The Waunakee prep girls soccer team had a frustrating weekend at the Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa, losing all three of their matches in their round-robin group – all by one goal.

But when it comes to Northern Badger Conference play, the Warriors remain virtually unbeatable.

Sophomore Grace Lujan and junior Olivia Zaleski scored in the opening 15 minutes and senior Emily Mouille, a Marquette recruit, finished off the scoring on the hour mark as Waunakee blanked host Mount Horeb 3-0 on Tuesday night.

It was the 55th consecutive conference victory for the Warriors (7-5-0), a streak that dates to their only loss in league play: 1-0 to Reedsburg on May 20, 2003. Waunakee, which moved into the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 2 state poll this week at No. 5, is 66-1-0 all-time in Northern Badger matches. Mount Horeb is ranked third in Division 3.

  • State sides fared well overall at the Tournament of Champions. Milwaukee DSHA and Whitefish Bay advanced to the semifinals in the highly competitive Bracket A before falling to nationally ranked foes: The Dashers allowed their first goal of the season to St. Charles North (Ill.), which was ranked 49th in the Student Sports Fab 50, and lost 1-0, while the Blue Dukes dropped a 2-0 decision to top-ranked Kansas City St. Teresa's. The teams were supposed to meet in the third-place match, but considering they're already scheduled to play each other May 16 at Quad Park in Milwaukee, tournament organizers allowed them to change opponents for their final match of the tournament. The Blue Dukes topped Jefferson City (Mo.) 3-1, while DSHA lost to No. 38 Aurora Metea Valley (Ill.) 2-1. Meanwhile, Middleton finished third and Sussex Hamilton was fifth in Bracket B. The tournament, which included 34 teams this year, is planning to expand next year and is looking into adding a second weekend of matches. DSHA, Middleton and Sussex Hamilton are among the 17 teams that already have committed to play in next year's event.
  • Whitefish Bay's performance was even more impressive when considering that sophomore Kristin Hirst, normally a field player, had to play in goal for the Blue Dukes – regular starter Amanda Pandl couldn't make the trip because of her confirmation. Hirst posted the clean sheet in Friday's 0-0 tie with then-No. 41 St. Louis Visitation and made a save during the ensuing penalty kicks as Bay advanced, then made 11 saves against St. Teresa's. "She did really well," Bay coach Robert Williams wrote in an email. "We played well down there. I was really proud of the team."
  • Racine Prairie School claimed the Racine County Invitational, outlasting defending champion Racine St. Catherine's 4-3 on penalty kicks after the Metro Classic Conference rivals tied 2-2 in Saturday's final at Racine Horlick.
  • Milwaukee King topped Milwaukee Reagan 1-0 on Saturday to win the Milwaukee City Cup at Pulaski Stadium, hours after Milwaukee South posted a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Madison co-op in the Milwaukee City Tournament final on the same field. The City Cup featured the City Conference's top four teams from 2013, while the other six league sides played in the City Tournament.
  • Junior Cassie Siedschlag scored twice in 2 minutes midway through the second half as Baraboo rallied past host Reedsburg 3-2 on Tuesday to snap a 10-game conference losing streak. It was the Thunderbirds' first Northern Badger victory since a 1-0 win over Sauk Prairie back on May 18, 2011.
  • Te'Hiva Simmons scored in the 20th minute and Megan Jordan posted the clean sheet Tuesday as Fort Atkinson blanked host Oregon 1-0, halting the Panthers' 14-game winning streak in Southern Badger Conference play. Oregon, ranked third in Division 2, saw a second-half penalty kick hit the post as it lost a league match for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Milton on May 10, 2011. It was the first time the Blackhawks have beaten the Panthers, according to the Daily Jefferson Union.
  • Waukesha Catholic Memorial (13-0-0) routed neighbor Waukesha South 7-0 on Tuesday for its 28th consecutive win, extending what is believed to be the longest streak in state history. The Crusaders also are unbeaten in their past 43 matches (42-0-1). If they continue that streak, they would tie the state record of 56 – set by Catholic Memorial from 1995 to '97 – in the Division 3 sectional finals.
  • The Crusaders remained 18th in this week's Student Sports Fab 50, while DSHA dropped 18 spots to 48th. No. 2 Catholic Memorial and the No. 6 Dashers stayed in the same spots in the website's Great Lakes Region poll, while Brookfield Central moved up one place to No. 9.
