The top two teams in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 state poll faced off Wednesday night, and it looked like the early-season showdown between Milwaukee DSHA and host Menomonee Falls was headed for overtime.

But Dashers junior forward Maria Kass snapped a scoreless tie with just more than 4 minutes remaining, then added an insurance goal in the final minute as top-ranked DSHA pulled out a 2-0 victory over No. 2 Falls  in a Greater Metro Conference match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Myszewski posted the clean sheet for the Dashers (5-0-1), who have outscored opponents 22-0 this season. Junior Eden Charles and sophomore Allie Andreski assisted on Kass' late goals, which came in the 76th and 79th minutes.

Senior Kayla Heagney matched Myszewski most of the night for Falls (5-1-0), which had allowed just one goal coming into the game.

  • DSHA also is ranked 38th in the latest Student Sports Fab 50 national rankings, up nine spots from last week, while Waukesha Catholic Memorial rose four places to No. 23. The three state teams in the website's Great Lakes Region rankings – No. 3 Catholic Memorial, No. 6 DSHA and No. 10 Neenah – all edged up one spot this week.
  • Catholic Memorial fell three places to 17th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 and slipped one spot to fourth in the Region III poll.
  • The Crusaders play host to the 20th annual Laura Moynihan Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. The event, which honors the memory of the girls soccer pioneer and former UW-Milwaukee coach who died of cancer at the age of 47 in 1992, features the top three teams in the WSCA Division 3 state poll with Catholic Memorial, No. 2 Grafton and No. 3 Pewaukee. The Black Hawks and Pirates could meet in the semifinals, while Catholic Memorial is on the other half of the bracket. The eight-team tourney also features Fond du Lac, Muskego, Oconomowoc, South Milwaukee and Sauk Prairie. Matches start at 5:30 p.m. Friday, with semifinals Saturday morning and placement games starting at noon. The final is scheduled for 2 p.m.
  • Junior Annabel Ware scored twice as Racine Prairie School beat Greendale Martin Luther 3-1 on Wednesday in the final game on its grass field. Construction will begin soon on the Ruud Family Soccer Complex, which will include the artificial turf Oseicki Field, two portable team enclosures and expanded seating in new bleachers. The complex also will have lights, but the school expects them to be used infrequently – mainly during boys games late in the fall season. The facility will be solely used by Prairie School teams and students, with no club, amateur or adult matches being played on Oseicki Field. The Hawks' girls team, ranked first in the WSCA Division 4 state poll, will play its remaining three home games this season at the Soccer Complex of Racine. The field is expected to be ready for the start of the boys season in August.
  • With northern Wisconsin dealing with snowstorms the past few weeks, at least six state teams came into the week without having yet played a game. That list was cut in half on Tuesday as Antigo, Medford and Northland Pines finally started their seasons. Still waiting for their openers: Bayfield-Washburn, Phillips and Three Lakes.
  • Meanwhile, two schools canceled their varsity seasons due to a lack of players: Green Bay NEW Lutheran and Two Rivers. The Blazers would have had just six eligible players, athletic director Mike Stock wrote in an email. The Purple Raiders, meanwhile, have one team and are playing a junior varsity schedule this spring.
  • Bob Prange, who was a fixture on the sidelines in Milwaukee-area prep soccer throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, recently was named boys coach at Naples (Fla.). Prange had stints coaching both the boys and girls teams at Wauwatosa West, his alma mater, and the Hartland Arrowhead boys before heading up both programs at Wauwatosa East – 2008 was his final season with both Tosa East sides. Prange was the boys JV coach at Naples last season and will replace Tony Perez-Benitoa as varsity coach for the 2014-15 season, which runs from November to February.
