For the second straight year, a Mequon United girls team will play for a USL Super-Y League North American Championship.
Courtney Wiencek and Katherine Murphy (Wauwatosa West) scored as Mequon United got past Michigan's Force FC Academy 2-1 in the Under-15 girls semifinals Sunday morning in Bradenton, Fla., advancing to a rematch against Pennsylvania's Super Nova FC in Monday's final. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. Central.
The teams both finished 2-0-1 in group play after tying 1-1 on Saturday. Greta Ricigliano (Glendale Nicolet) had the goal for Mequon United, which lost to the Cleveland Internationals 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in the Under-14 final last year.
Murphy and Ricigliano both scored in Friday's 2-0 win over the Virginia Alliance, while Nicole Albrecht (Cedarburg) had the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts' MPS Lady Crusaders in Thursday's opener. Kelli Ausman (Mequon Homestead) posted shutouts in each of those matches.
Super Nova FC was the top seed from Group A thanks to a plus-5 goal differential, compared to Mequon United's plus-3. The Pennsylvania side outlasted New Hampshire's Seacoast United Premiere, seeded second in Group B, on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in the other semifinal. Mequon United was the first team to score against Force FC Academy, which posted clean sheets in each of its group games.
