U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series

After three days of group play at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, one Wisconsin team was left standing.

Ben Ducett (Mukwonago) scored in the opening five minutes and Dominic Spano (Kettle Moraine) posted a clean sheet as the SC Waukesha Blue Under-17 boys team posted a 1-0 victory over Nebraska's Omaha FC Elite 1 on Monday to win its pool and earn a spot in Tuesday's semifinals.

SC Waukesha (3-0-0) will face Michigan's Alliance Black (2-0-1) at noon Tuesday, with the winner moving on to Wednesday's regional final. Region II champions advance to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, which are July 23 to 28 in Overland Park, Kan.

The 16 Wisconsin sides finished a combined 16-26-6 in group play. Here are some of Monday's highlights from matches involving Wisconsin teams:

  • Brian Gonzalez scored four goals, the final three in a 21-minute span in the second half, as Ace Milwaukee trounced Sporting Blue Valley SKC Academy (Kan.) 6-0 in the Under-13 boys division. Ace finished 2-1-0 and tied with the Ohio Premier Eagles and Fort Wayne Fever (Ind.) atop its group, but missed out on the semifinal berth based on goal differential – the Eagles' plus-6 total was one better than that of the Milwaukee side.
  • In the only regional match pitting Wisconsin teams against each other, the Madison 56ers tipped SC Waukesha 3-2 in Under-18 boys play. The 56ers' roster includes nine Under-17 players and three Under-16 players.
  • Kaitlyn Zanon scored a 35th-minute equalizer for SC Waukesha Blue in an Under-13 girls match, but Carmel United (Ind.) pulled out a 2-1 victory to claim the group title and a semifinal berth.
  • A 1-0 loss to J.B. Marine-Schneider (Mo.) left SC Waukesha Blue-1 tied for the group title in Under-14 girls action, and the Wisconsin team missed out on a tiebreaker – they had a plus-1 goal differential and J.B. Marine-Schneider had a plus-2, while Libertyville FC 1974 (Ill.) took the semifinal berth at plus-5.
  • Middleton's Rush Wisconsin Nike went into its pool finale needing to beat Kentucky Fire Juniors Premier Red (Kent.) to advance in Under-15 girls, but dropped a 2-0 decision.
  • Katie Ciesiulka had two goals and fellow Marquette recruit Ashley Handwork added another as Team Chicago Academy Botafogo (Ill.) rolled past the Appleton Goal Getters 7-1 in Under-18 girls play.
