If the Madison 56ers get past the Des Moines Menace of the USL Premier Development League in their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup opener next week, the National Premier Soccer League team's reward will be a trip to the Twin Cities.
The winner of the first-round match between the 56ers and Menace will play Minnesota United FC of the North American Soccer League in the second round on May 21 at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Former UW-Milwaukee player Manny Lagos is the coach and technical director for Minnesota United, which knocked off Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake 3-1 in the third round of the Open Cup last year before losing to the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in the fourth round – the team was known as the Minnesota Stars, but changed its name during the offseason.
Minnesota, which won the 2011 NASL title and advanced to the league finals last year, is off to a 2-0-2 start in the spring portion of the NASL season.
The 56ers and Menace will play the final first-round match of the 100th U.S. Open Cup at 7:30 p.m. May 15 at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines, Iowa. Madison opens play in the NPSL Midwest Region Central Conference two days later against Eau Claire Aris FC at Breese Stevens Field.
