UW

This was the kind of offense University of Wisconsin women's soccer coach Paula Wilkins was expecting from her team this season.

Cara Walls (Wauwatosa East) scored for the third straight match, fellow freshman forward Nikki Greenhalgh added the first goal of her career and senior forward Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead) netted her first of the season as the Badgers dropped previously unbeaten Dayton 3-1 on Friday night in Dayton, Ohio.

Senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton made eight saves as UW (3-1-0) won its third in a row since a 2-0 loss to then-No. 1 Notre Dame in its season opener.

Walls opened the scoring, as her shot deflected off a Flyers defender, over keeper Katherine Boone and just under the crossbar in the 17th minute. Freshman midfielder Julia Roddar earned her second assist on the play, having chipped the ball in to Walls.

Nosbusch, who has led the Badgers in scoring each of the past three seasons, took a pass from senior central defender Meghan Flannery (Whitefish Bay/Milwaukee DSHA) and flicked a header past Boone to double the lead in the 64th.

With her 24th goal, Nosbusch moved into sole possession of seventh place on the UW career goal-scoring list – she's also eighth in career points with 64.

Dayton (4-1-0), ranked 18th in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com and 23rd by Soccer America, pulled one back two minutes later through Kelsey Smigel, but Greenhalgh sealed the victory in the 74th.

Dalton punted the ball up field, and UW junior midfielder Alev Kelter headed it toward the box. Greenhalgh tracked down the ball and held off two defenders before finishing in the middle of the box.

Sophomore defender Ali Heller, back from a stress fracture in her leg, came off the bench to make her UW debut.
