The University of Wisconsin women's soccer program continues to land top-level recruits from north of the border.
Defender Diamond Simpson of Mississauga, Ontario, is the latest Canadian standout to commit to the Badgers, according to Brian Goff's Women's Soccer Recruiting Page. UW hasn't yet announced its 2011 recruiting class.
Simpson was the Canadian Under-17 Player of the Year for 2010 – UW midfielder Monica Lam-Feist won that award in 2007 and '08 – after helping the Under-17 national team win the CONCACAF championship and qualify for the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup.
She also has made two appearances for the full national team, playing the final seven minutes of a 5-0 rout over The Netherlands and all 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw against Brazil.
In the first 26 years of the UW program, only two Canadians played for the Badgers, but coach Paula Wilkins and her staff have brought in seven Canadian recruits in the past four years. UW assistant Tim Rosenfeld's uncle, Bryan Rosenfeld, is the Canadian Under-17 national team coach.
Simpson, who also plays for Dixie Soccer Club, will be one of six Canadians on the Badgers' roster in the fall, joining Lam-Feist, midfielder Kodee Williams, forward Paige Adams, defender Lacey Warner and goalkeeper Genevieve Richard.
