The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team finally broke through on the scoreboard, but couldn't hold on for its first win of the season.
Freshman Kodee Williams put the Badgers ahead in the 34th minute, but Washington equalized 10 minutes before time as the teams played to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon to close the Husky Invitational in Seattle.
"I am disappointed that we didn't get a result this weekend,” UW coach Paula Wilkins said in a news release.
"I think it’s difficult to come out here and play the likes of Portland and Washington. To get a tie, I think that moves this young team in the right direction. ... I think that we learned some important lessons from this, but we need to continue to develop."
Williams recorded her first career goal – and the first of the season for the Badgers – when her shot deflected off Washington goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman and into the net.
"I am happy that Kodee got her first goal," said Wilkins, whose team went without a goal for the opening 303 minutes of the season. "I think that it’s part of a learning curve for us, and we need to be able to hold onto a lead when we get ahead. I think that’s another baby step for us as a program."
Once again, UW (0-3-1) was done in by a set piece.
Kellye Joswick served in a free kick and senior defender Kendyl Pele headed it past Badgers senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Four of the five goals UW has allowed this season have come off set pieces.
"That is something we have to focus on,” Wilkins said.
Dalton finished with four saves, while LaFontaine-Kussman had two – each keeper had one stop after regulation. The Huskies (3-1-1) finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots.
