Mallory Koula (Kimberly) set an NCAA record Saturday. And once that was done, she added a Lawrence program record to her resume, too.
The senior forward scored three consecutive goals in just 42 seconds – the fastest by an individual in NCAA history at any level in men's or women's play – as the Vikings cruised past visiting Beloit College 6-1 in a Midwest Conference match.
Lawrence (4-9-1 overall, 2-3-1 Midwest) led 2-0 when Koula started her record outburst. She scored off a pass from fellow senior Cadence Peckham at the 26-minute, 36-second mark. The Vikings quickly got the ball back after the kickoff and freshman Keli Muchowski (Neenah) played a through ball that Koula ran onto and finished at 26:54. Seconds later, the two connected again and Koula scored at the 27:18 mark.
The previous record for the fastest three goals by an individual in NCAA history was 1 minute, 7 seconds by Otterbein's Jamie Sims on Oct. 19, 2002 against Muskingum (Ohio), which was the previous Division III women's record. It also was the quickest three goals by a team in NCAA Division III women's history, surpassing the three goals Emory scored in 52 seconds against Agnes Scott (Ga.) on Sept. 23, 1989.
Koula then added her career-best fourth goal of the day in the 75th minute to give her 56 for her career – breaking the program record set by Megan Tiemann from 1998 to 2001. Koula was named the women's Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week in recognition of her record-breaking week.
Honor rollUW-Whitewater senior forward Emily Gerber (DeForest) was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after enjoying a momentous weekend. On Saturday, Gerber set up the first two goals and scored the winner in the 88th minute as the Warhawks beat UW-Stevens Point 3-2, just the second time Whitewater has beaten the Pointers in 29 all-time meetings between the teams (2-26-1). It also was the fourth WIAC loss of the season for Point, which hadn't lost more than two league matches in any season until this year. Then on Sunday, Gerber had an assist in the Warhawks' 5-1 victory over UW-Superior, tying the program records for assists in a season (10) and a career (28) – she matched former teammate Becky Cera (Wauwatosa West), who played from 2006 to '09 and established the season mark in 2009. Gerber already holds the Whitewater records for goals and points in a season and career. - After recording Creighton's first hat trick since 2004, senior forward Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week and was the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. He had all three goals as the then-No. 4 Bluejays dropped seventh-ranked UC Irvine 3-1 on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. Finlay increased his career totals to 38 goals and 95 points, moving him past a current Major League Soccer player and a former pro in the school record books – he is fifth in goals, having leapfrogged Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan (36), and stands sixth in points after surpassing former MLS midfielder Richard Mulrooney (89).
- Marquette freshman midfielder Sebastian Jansson joined Finlay on the CSN Team of the Week and also was the Big East Conference Rookie of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in both matches as the Golden Eagles upset then-No. 12 Notre Dame 1-0 on Wednesday and then-No. 23 West Virginia 2-1 on Saturday. The goal against the Fighting Irish was the first collegiate goal for Jansson, who hails from Sodertalje, Sweden.
- Junior David Check (Mequon Homestead) was the Big East Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time in his career after making 10 saves in Marquette's victories. He had a .909 save percentage and a 0.50 goals-against average on the week for the Golden Eagles, who lead the Big East Blue Division (5-0-0).
- For the second time in three weeks, University of Wisconsin sophomore keeper Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) was named the Big Ten Conference Defensive of the Week, sharing the honor with Northwestern's Nikko Boxall. Jentsch made two saves in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Michigan State, his second shutout of the season for the Big Ten-leading Badgers.
- Marquette also dominated the Big East women's weekly awards, as sophomore forward Maegan Kelly was chosen the Offensive Player of the Week and junior Ally Miller (Mequon Homestead) was the Defensive Player of the Week. Kelly had two goals and two assists, playing a hand in four of the Golden Eagles' goals as they beat St. John's 2-1 and Syracuse 4-0 on the road. In addition to her contribution to a defense that allowed just one goal and five shots on frame in the wins, Miller also scored her first goal of the season and added an assist in the win over the Orange.
- Kelly also was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week, along with Baylor junior forward Dana Larsen (Mequon Homestead). Larsen had three goals and her first assist of the season as the Bears (13-2-2) beat Missouri 3-1 and Jackson State 5-0 last week, and her nine goals on the season are the most for a Baylor player in a year since 2007. The Bears are ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Region poll.
- UW-Milwaukee senior Keara Thompson was selected the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for September. She had four assists and played all but 13 minutes in helping the Panthers to a 6-1-0 record in the month, and maintains a 3.915 grade-point average as a health sciences major.
- Standout UWM senior forward Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) was honored as a "Prime Time Performer" by College Soccer 360 after scoring her 17th and 18th goals of the season in a 4-1 win over Butler on Saturday. Hagen was recognized as a "Top Performer" by the league along with UW-Green Bay senior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton Xavier), who made seven saves in a 0-0 draw against Youngstown State.
- On the men's side, Green Bay senior midfielder Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East) and Milwaukee junior forward Cody Banks (Madison Memorial) also were lauded as "Top Performers" in the Horizon League. Walls had the lone goal in the Phoenix's 1-0 win over Butler on Saturday, while Banks assisted on both Panthers goals in a 2-2 tie against Wright State on Saturday.
- Western Michigan junior forward Brittney Pavlica (Kenosha Bradford) was the women's Mid-American Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Pavlica had the lone goal in 1-0 wins over Central Michigan on Friday and over Eastern Michigan in double overtime on Saturday. All four of Pavlica's goals this season are game-winners.
- UW-Oshkosh senior keeper James Pike (Wauwatosa West) was the men's WIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this fall after recording his 19th and 20th career shutouts as the Titans beat St. Mary's (Minn.) 1-0 on Friday and UW-Platteville 2-0 on Sunday, making five saves in the process. Junior forward Logan Fye, who had three goals and two assists on the week as UW-Whitewater posted league wins over Finlandia (Mich.) and UW-Superior, claimed the offensive award.
- The WIAC women's defensive player of the week was UW-La Crosse senior keeper Sagan Pizzingrilli (Madison West), who racked up 14 saves in consecutive 1-0 victories over UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls. Pizzingrilli has eight clean sheets on the season for the Eagles.
- Cornell freshman keeper Kassi Todryk (Marshfield) earned special mention in the women's soccer defensive category in the weekly Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference awards. She made five saves in a 3-2 overtime loss to Dubuque, allowing the game-winner on a penalty kick, then stopped four shots for the clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Coe.
- Sophomore center back Charlie Mann, who anchored the backline as Lawrence beat Ripon 2-0 and Beloit College 2-1 in overtime last week, was the men's Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Alumni update
Boston Breakers and U.S. national team midfielder Leslie Osborne (Brookfield/Waukesha Catholic Memorial) had her No. 10 jersey retired by Santa Clara at halftime of last Thursday's 0-0 draw against Brigham Young at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Osborne, who was a three-time All-American during her career with the Broncos from 2001 to '04, became the fourth player in program history to have her jersey honored, joining Brandi Chastain, Aly Wagner and Danielle Slaton.
The 2004 Honda Award winner as the nation's top women's soccer player, Osborne had 44 goals and 34 assists in her career at Santa Clara. The team won the NCAA title in 2001, lost in the national final in 2002 and advanced to the College Cup semifinals in 2004.
Coaching change
Ripon men's coach Lance Gordon resigned last Friday, effective immediately, for health reasons. Sam Schroeder, in his first season as the school's women's coach, added the role of interim men's coach to his duties for the remainder of the season.
Gordon was the Midwest Conference Coach of the Year last fall after leading the Red Hawks to a 11-6-1 overall record, the MWC regular-season title and a berth in the conference tournament final. Ripon was 20-24-5 and 14-8-1 in the MWC during Gordon's two-plus seasons.
"Lance's contributions to the Red Hawk men's soccer team has been greatly appreciated," Ripon athletic director Julie Johnson said in a news release. "It's unfortunate that he could not finish the season with his team, but he has to do what is best for his health."
Gordon, a Madison-area native who previously worked in the Mount Horeb Soccer Club, also compiled a 27-18-2 record in three seasons at UW-Fox Valley before taking over the Red Hawks.
