Freshman defender A.J. Cochran scored his first collegiate goal on a diving header in the 81st minute to give the University of Wisconsin a 1-1 draw with state rival Marquette in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at the McClimon Complex. (Video highlights)
Cochran finished off a free kick by junior midfielder Tomislav Zadro from the right corner as the Badgers (4-3-2) extended their unbeaten streak to four heading into their Big Ten Conference opener Sunday afternoon at home against No. 6 Indiana. Zadro has a goal or an assist in each of the past seven matches.
UW's late equalizer offset a header by Golden Eagles defender Eric Pothast off a set piece in the 36th minute, also his first goal of the season. He nodded a free kick from senior midfielder Calum Mallace past Badgers goalkeeper Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) to open the scoring in the 36th.
Both Jentsch and Marquette junior keeper David Check (Mequon Homestead) finished with six saves, and each stopped two shots during overtime – Jentsch's came in the first 10-minute period, while Check's were in the second session to help the Golden Eagles (3-4-2) push their unbeaten streak to four, too.
Sophomore midfielder Blake Succa nearly won it for UW in the 110th minute, but his shot hit the post with 9 seconds left. The Badgers had a 20-11 advantage in shots as they kept Marquette winless in Madison since 1999 (0-3-3). Golden Eagles coach Louis Bennett was sent off for dissent in the 64th minute.
