Corey Attaway's 14th-minute goal was the difference as 25th-ranked UC Irvine knocked off the University of Wisconsin 1-0 on Monday afternoon to close out the UC Irvine Classic.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Vint finished with six saves for the Badgers (1-1), who struggled to generate scoring opportunities for the second straight game – they were outshot 13-4 after being outshot 10-3 in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Santa Clara.
"Tonight’s outcome was a fair result," UW coach John Trask said in a news release. "UC Irvine is a high-caliber NCAA tournament team. Our guys learned some lessons tonight, and we will take that with us as we move forward.”
Attaway sent a header past Vint off a throw-in by Jimmy Turner for his second goal of the year to provide the Anteaters (3-0) all the offense they would need.
UC Irvine keeper Andrew Fontein posted his third straight shutout to start the season, but UW forced him into his first two saves of the year – he stopped shots by freshman Paul Yonga in the seventh minute and senior Jon Rzepka in the 60th.
Freshmen Luke Goodnetter (Brookfield East) and Joey Tennyson (Menomonee Falls) made their debuts for the Badgers, playing 56 and 27 minutes, respectively. Senior Aaron Nichols, junior Arnel Zahirovic and sophomore Kyle McCrudden all played the full 90 minutes for the second consecutive match.
Vint, Nichols and freshman Chris Prince were named to the all-tournament team for UW, which continues its season-opening road trip next weekend at Florida International and Florida Atlantic.
