Ryan QuammeUW-Whitewater didn't need to look far for its next women's soccer coach.

Ryan Quamme, the top assistant for the school's men's and women's team the past four years, was promoted to women's coach Thursday.

He succeeds Greg Henschel, who coached both Warhawks teams for 12 seasons before being named the women's coach at UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday.

"As we transition forward, we feel we have an outstanding head women's coach in Ryan Quamme," Whitewater athletic director Paul Plinske said in a news release.

"He is a gifted individual with great insight of Warhawk soccer. He is a focused leader with great knowledge of the game, regional recruiting ties and the ability to build a strong, fundamentally sound team. Simply put, he's a great match for our women's program."

Quamme also was named director of soccer operations, a role Henschel also held. However, the school will hire a new men's coach.

"There is no doubt Ryan could have led both men's and women's programs here at UW-Whitewater, but our goal is to position ourselves to be regional leaders with a national presence," Plinske said "Our most successful regional competitors have separate men's and women's head coaches and we feel that the time is now to build on our soccer program's strong foundation with a new model."

Quamme, a McFarland native, is well known in the Madison soccer community. He coached the Madison East girls team in 2003 and '04, was the Milton girls coach last spring, coached in the Verona Area Soccer Club (1997 to '99) and Middleton-Yahara Soccer Club (1999 to 2010) and worked with the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association as an Olympic Development Program staff coach last year.

Henschel led the Whitewater men's team to a 160-68-20 overall record, including a 14-0-2 mark and titles in each of the first three seasons of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, and 10 NCAA Division III tournament appearances in 13 years. The women's program earned its first NCAA berth last fall after winning its second straight WIAC championship. Henschel had a 126-91-13 record in his 12 years, including 55-35-8 in conference matches.

"I embrace the opportunity to continue to build on the great tradition of both our men's and women's programs for years to come," Quamme said.

  • Northern Illinois didn't renew the contract of women's coach Carrie Barker, a former University of Wisconsin player and assistant, following the 2011 season. Barker led the Huskies to a 25-41-11 overall record and a 12-26-6 mark in Mid-American Conference play. NIU was 2-15-2 overall and 1-10-0 in the MAC in 2011, when it was shut out in 14 times in all competitions. The school didn't publicly announce Barker's departure until unveiling former North Dakota State coach John Ross as the fourth coach in program history earlier this week.
  • The UW Athletic Board on Friday extended the contracts of Badgers men's coach John Trask and women's coach Paula Wilkins through Jan. 31, 2015.
