Colleges: CSN honors Finlay, Mallace PDF Print E-mail

College Soccer NewsCreighton senior forward Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) collected another All-American honor, while Marquette midfielder Calum Mallace added his first.

Finlay was a first-team choice and Mallace made the second team of the College Soccer News team.

On Friday, Finlay was named to the top team of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division I men's All-America team and was announced as one of three finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, awarded to the country's top player.

Mallace had three goals and six assists as he led Marquette to its first Big East Conference Blue Division title. The Big East Midfielder of the Year was the Golden Eagles' MVP this season, and closed his career with 13 goals (eight game-winners) and 13 assists.

NSCAA all-region

UW-Whitewater senior midfielder Emily Gerber (DeForest) and UW-Stout senior defender Courtney Tideman led nine players with state ties on the NSCAA women's Division III All-North Region teams.

Gerber and Tideman previously were announced as third-team All-Americans.

St. Norbert freshman forward Katie Vanden Avond (De Pere), who tied for the national lead with 30 goals, made the second team along with Loras (Iowa) sophomore defender Kinsey Campbell (Greendale). Campbell was part of a Duhawks backline that posted a 0.76 goals-against average.

The third team featured five Wisconsin players: UW-Oshkosh senior defender Kelsey Spaith (Madison Memorial), Carroll senior defender Leah Wiercinski (De Pere), UW-Stevens Point junior forward Sammy Greer (Hartford), Lawrence senior forward Mallory Koula (Kimberly) and Stout junior midfielder Emily Stanke.

  • Rochester (N.Y.) senior forward Ellen Coleman (Wauwatosa West), who led the Yellowjackets with 10 goals and shared the team lead with five assists, was voted to the first team of the All-East Region squad. Coleman finished her career with a program-record 112 points.
  • Milwaukee School of Engineering senior forward Jessica Axt (Germantown), who matched Vanden Avond with 30 goals, and Concordia junior midfielder Lauren Straehler were named to the All-Central Region second team. Edgewood College junior forward Elaine Gerry (Sauk Prairie), Concordia sophomore defender Ashley Apazeller (West Bend West/UW-Milwaukee) and Marian freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Rosenberger (Pewaukee) made the third team.
