Mallace, Zadro earn all-region honors PDF Print E-mail

National Soccer Coaches Association of AmericaThe midfielders who made the the offenses go for the Marquette and University of Wisconsin men's soccer teams this fall were honored with spots on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region team.

Golden Eagles senior Calum Mallace was a first-team selection on the regional team, while Badgers junior Tomislav Zadro made the second team.

Mallace, who had three goals and six assists, helped lead Marquette to its first Big East Conference Blue Division title and was the Golden Eagles' team MVP. He finished his career with 13 goals (eight game-winners) and 13 assists and was invited to the Major League Soccer Combine.

Zadro, a transfer from Illinois Central, led UW with six goals and eight assists – meaning he had a hand in 56 percent of the Badgers' 25 goals. He's the first Badgers player to make the all-region team since defender Aaron Hohlbein (Middleton) was a first-team choice back in 2006.

  • Quinnipiac junior forward Phillip Surprise (Milwaukee Pius) made the All-North Atlantic Region second team. Surprise led the Bobcats with five goals and four assists.
  • Senior forward Ethan Finlay (Marshfield), who was the leading scorer for NCAA College Cup semifinalists Creighton, was a first-team selection on the All-Midwest Region team.

NCAA Division II

UW-Parkside senior forward Shannon Becker (De Pere) was named to the All-Midwest Region team by both the NSCAA and Daktronics, while Rangers junior defender Lauki'I Cheng was a second-team selection on both teams.

Becker, a first-team all-region pick for the third straight year after being a second-teamer as a freshman in 2008, had eight goals and 15 assists this season and finished her career as the program's leader in goals (42), assists (47) and points (131) and matched the school mark with 12 game-winning goals. Cheng was an all-region choice for the third time in as many years, making the second team for the second consecutive season.

Grand Valley State junior forward Ashley Botts (Beloit) joined Becker on the top squad of the all-region teams.

Bellarmine (Kent.) junior goalkeeper Amy Kunowski (Greendale) and Northern Michigan junior defender Becky Schmidt (Slinger) were third-team picks. Kunowski had a 0.56 goals-against average and 10 shutouts for the Knights, while Schmidt had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats.

  • Senior forward Melissa Sellier (Neenah), who led Winona State (Minn.) with 10 goals and nine assists, was a second-team selection on the NSCAA All-Central Region team.
  • Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) senior defender Kelli Bahr (Middleton) earned spots on the NSCAA and Daktronics All-Southeast Region teams.
  • Regis (Colo.) junior defender Taylor Diem (Middleton) made both All-Central Region men's teams, landing on the first team of the Daktronics squad and the second team of the NSCAA team. Diem, who started his college career at Division I Hofstra, had two goals and an assist in 15 matches (14 starts) for the Rangers this season.

More honors

Eight players with state ties were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes – to earn the award, student-athletes must be a junior or senior and maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Making the women's team were Viterbo senior midfielder Lauren Neet (Plover/Stevens Point), Cardinal Stritch senior defender Ashley Billo (Oak Creek), Briar Cliff (Iowa) junior defender Sarah Novickis (Green Bay/Ashwaubenon), Culver-Stockton (Mo.) senior forward Katie MacBride (River Falls), Dordt (Iowa) senior midfielder Kelly Smies (Oostburg/Sheboygan Christian) and Trinity Christian (Ill.) senior midfielder Anna Gesch (Cedar Grove). Cardinal Stritch junior defender David Szymanski (Oak Creek) and Viterbo senior midfielder Christopher Bagshaw were recognized on the men's side.

  • Maranatha Baptist had eight players honored as National Christian College Athletic Association Division II Scholar-Athletes: junior defenders Alysha Morris (Watertown Maranatha Baptist) and Christina Manion (Watertown Maranatha Baptist), senior midfielders Olivia Mueller (Portage) and Andrea Jochum and junior forward Karis Rogers were lauded in the women's division, while the senior trio of midfielder Joseph Zoller, goalkeeper Mark McIntyre and forward Benjamin Zakariasen were the representatives for the men's team. Northland International junior defender Jason Lorch and sophomore forward Mark Romig also earned the award, along with Pioneers junior defender-midfielder Lauren McCoy.
  • Northland International senior midfielder Daniel Doran was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player at the NCCAA Division II men's national tournament, while Lorch and sophomore midfielder Josh Netz joined him on the all-tournament team. Pioneers junior midfielder Jami Beiler and sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Newton made the women's all-tournament team.
