Beloit College, Lawrence, Maranatha Baptist and Marquette are among 153 schools nationwide that had both their men's and women's soccer programs earn the NSCAA Team Academic Award this season.
The honor was awarded to 787 teams with a 3.0 grade-point average or better, including 568 women's teams and 219 men's programs. Thirteen Wisconsin women's teams met the standard along with five men's sides.
Women: Marquette (coach Markus Roeders), 3.47; Lawrence (Lisa Sammons), 3.37; Beloit College (Liz Bartley) and UW-Green Bay (Trevor Warren), 3.32; UW-Milwaukee (Michael Moynihan), 3.28; UW-Eau Claire (Sean Yengo), 3.26; Maranatha Baptist (Bryan Board) and Viterbo (Scott Pirnstill), 3.17; University of Wisconsin (Paula Wilkins) and UW-Whitewater (Greg Henschel), 3.14; Marian (Jason Murphy) and UW-Stevens Point (Sheila Miech), 3.11; UW-Superior (Melissa Hornfeck), 3.07.
Men: Beloit College (Tim Schmeichen), 3.28; Lawrence (Blake Johnson), 3.20; Maranatha Baptist (Jeff Pill), 3.11; UW-Oshkosh (Wytse Molenaar), 3.07; Marquette (Louis Bennett), 3.00.
Seven other programs whose coaches have state ties also were honored.
On the women's side, former UW player Marci Jobson's Baylor team had a 3.63 GPA; Loyola (Ill.) compiled a 3.50 GPA under former Marquette men's assistant Barry Bimbi; former Badgers player Carrie Barker saw her Northern Illinois program record a 3.29 GPA; Michigan logged a 3.28 GPA under former UW coach Greg Ryan; and NCAA Division II Michigan Tech, coached by Michelle Jacob (Neenah/UW-Stevens Point), posted a 3.12 GPA.
Former UW-Milwaukee coach Brian Tompkins' Yale men's team recorded a 3.35 GPA and Wright State, under the direction of coach Bryan Davis (Milwaukee/UW), had a 3.04 GPA.
