There was more than one successful women's soccer team at Marquette this fall.
While the Golden Eagles varsity team claimed a share of its third straight Big East Conference American Division title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, the school's club team won the Great Lakes Division of the Women's Midwest Alliance Soccer Conference and advanced to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association National Championships.
Marquette split its matches in pool play at nationals last weekend in Phoenix, falling to Pittsburgh 2-1 and beating Colorado State 1-0, before losing to Michigan State 3-1 in the Round of 16 to finish the season 10-4-1 overall.
The team, which was formed in 2005, tied Northwestern with a 5-0-1 mark in Great Lakes play. The sides tied 3-3 in the season finale, but Marquette claimed the title thanks to a plus-14 goal differential compared to Northwestern's plus-10.
Marquette went 8-1-1 in the regular season, with the lone loss a 2-1 setback against Central Michigan. The team also fell to Michigan 1-0 at the WMASC regional tournament Oct. 29 in Dayton, Ohio, but bounced back to beat Miami (Ohio) 2-1 and was awarded an at-large berth for nationals.
The team's roster featured at least one former NCAA Division I player in Rachel Koontz, who was a two-time Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association All-State selection at Milwaukee DSHA and redshirted at the University of Wisconsin last fall.
