UW-WhitewaterThe UW-Whitewater women's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better way to make its NCAA tournament debut.

Riley Kirchoff (Pewaukee) and Kaitlyn Fritsch (Monona Grove) scored and fellow freshman Jordan Myers stopped two shots for the shutout as the Warhawks blanked Aurora (Ill.) 2-0 in a Division III first-round match Friday night in Waverly, Iowa.

Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season champion Whitewater (14-4-2), unbeaten in its past 11 games, moves on to play 14th-ranked and host Wartburg (17-2-2) at 5 p.m. Saturday in the second round looking for a Sweet 16 berth.

The Warhawks held the Spartans (18-5-0), who won the Northern Athletics Conference regular-season and tournament titles, to just five shots – and the only two they put on frame were in the opening 23 minutes.

Kirchoff picked up her fifth goal of the season in the 32nd minute off a feed from senior midfielder Emily Gerber (DeForest), who extended her program record with her 12th assist of the season.

Fritsch added an insurance goal, slotting a shot past Aurora keeper Liz Wong in the 54th on what proved to be the last shot on goal of the night. Wong finished with three saves for the Spartans, who remained winless in eight NCAA appearances.

NCAA Division II women

Sophomore forward Stephanie Barsuli (Kenosha Bradford) scored a peculiar goal in the 94th minute as UW-Parkside outlasted Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Quincy (Ill.) 2-1 in overtime in a first-round match Friday night in Allendale, Mich.

With Quincy keeper Jodi Chapie off her line, Barsuli took a shot that was blocked by Lauren Drewett. But the Hawks defender was ruled to have been behind the goal line, giving Barsuli her eighth goal of the year and the Rangers (13-3-2) a second-round matchup against top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Grand Valley State (18-0-2) at noon Sunday. Parkside is making its fifth NCAA appearance and has played the Lakers in each of those tournaments.

The Rangers, who lost to Quincy 2-1 in GLVC play on Sept. 16, took the early lead in the 15th minute as junior Crystal Chalery (Milwaukee Pulaski) finished off a cross from senior Shannon Becker (De Pere) for her third goal of the year – it was Becker's 15th assist, tied for the third-most in a season in program history.

Quincy (15-5-2) tied it up in the 64th when Parkside senior keeper Cassie Glodowski (Waupaca) came out to grab a corner kick but missed the ball, allowing Brittany Casey to score.

NCAA Division III men

Nick Holtrop sent a header past Carthage junior goalkeeper Milan Tijanic in the 77th minute for the lone goal as Calvin (Mich.) got past the 23rd-ranked Red Men 1-0 in a first-round match Friday night in Dubuque, Iowa.

Carthage (14-6-2) outshot the Knights 18-12 – including 11-4 in the first half – but couldn't get a shot past Calvin junior keeper Michael Dolan, who made five saves in his seventh clean sheet of the season. Tijanic also stopped five shots for the Red Men, who had a seven-game winning streak come to an end.

"Dominating the first half, 11-4 in shots, and not getting on the scoreboard was the difference in the game," said Carthage coach Steve Domin, whose team was making its second NCAA appearance. "Having that much run of the play and being tied at half gave Calvin some life. ... We owned most of the statistics, but we were on the wrong side of the most important one."

  • Peter Jebson scored his second goal of the season off a set piece in the 69th minute as 15th-ranked Washington-St. Louis tipped visiting UW-Whitewater 2-1 in a first-round match Thursday night. The Warhawks (12-8-0) fell behind in the 48th but equalized through Logan Fye in the 61st, as the junior one-timed a pass from freshman Austin Saari (River Falls) past Bears goalkeeper Pat McLean from the top of the box for his ninth of the year. Minutes later, Washington had a corner kick that Zach Query controlled in the box and played to Jebson, whose first-time shot got past Whitewater junior keeper Matt Mikesell (Kettle Moraine). Mikesell was impressive in making seven saves for the Warhawks, who were outshot 15-7 as they were eliminated from their 11th NCAA appearance.

NCCAA Division II

Northland International, which made the National Christian College Athletic Association finals as an at-large team, will play for its ninth national championship at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Pioneers (12-7-1), seeded third in the eight-team tournament, beat Lancaster Bible (Pa.) 2-1 on Wednesday and got past No. 2 seed Ohio Christian 6-4 on penalty kicks following a 2-2 draw in Thursday's semifinals to earn a spot in the final against a familiar foe: Moody Bible (Ill.).

The top-seeded Archers (16-2-1) beat Northland International twice in one week last month, winning 1-0 in a regular-season match Oct. 22 and 4-1 on Oct. 29 in the NCCAA Midwest Regional final. Moody Bible is looking for its third national title – the last time the Archers won was in 2001, interrupting the Pioneers' domination of the event. Northland International won four straight championships from 1997 to 2000, then won three more from 2002 to '04.

  • On the women's side, the Pioneers (9-8-1) will play North Central (Minn.) in the third-place match at 11:15 a.m. Sixth-seeded Northland International upset No. 3 seed Clearwater Christian (Fla.) 2-0 in its opener, but dropped a 3-0 decision to second-seeded Baptist Bible in the semifinals.
