Marquette (17-3-0, 10-1-0 Big East)
Sunday: Notre Dame 1, No. 5 Golden Eagles 0. Senior Melissa Henderson scored her 18th goal of the season on a header in the ninth minute as the Fighting Irish (10-6-3) ended Marquette's nine-game winning streak and 19-game home unbeaten streak in a Big East Conference tournament quarterfinal at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles, who now will wait to learn their NCAA tournament assignment next Monday, were shut out for the first time this season and lost a Big East tournament match at home for the first time in six tries. Marquette had several chances to pull even, the best opportunities coming in the 17th when sophomore midfielder Taylor Madigan (Waunakee) blasted a shot that Notre Dame defender Jazmin Hall cleared off the line and in the 42nd when freshman midfielder Mary Luba (Shorewood) ran onto a through ball from junior Lisa Philbin but shot over the crossbar. Hall also played in the cross for Henderson's goal for the Irish, who lost to the Golden Eagles 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 25.
Up next: NCAA tournament: First round, Nov. 11, 12 or 13.
UW-Green Bay (3-11-4, 1-5-2 Horizon)
Friday: No. 15 UW-Milwaukee 7, Phoenix 0. A frustrating season for Green Bay came to an end with a lopsided loss to the conference champion Panthers (16-2-0, 8-0-0) at Engelmann Stadium. Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) gave UWM the lead in the 12th minute and it remained 1-0 until the 65th, when the floodgates opened – the seven goals were the most allowed by a Phoenix side since an 8-0 loss to Marquette on Sept. 12, 1999. Green Bay was shut out in its final six matches of the season and in 11 of its last 12 games, and scored in just four of its 18 matches. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton Xavier) finished with eight saves in her collegiate finale before freshman Katy Pilarzyk (Madison Memorial) played the final 24 minutes. Corey Arno (Winneconne) also closed out her UWGB career, having started all 68 matches over the past four years.
Up next: Season complete.
UW-Milwaukee (16-2-0, 8-0-0 Horizon)
Friday: No. 15 Panthers 7, UW-Green Bay 0. Hagen had a hat trick, and Milwaukee scored six times in the final 25 minutes to rout the Phoenix (3-11-4, 1-5-2) in its highest-scoring match in two years. "It's nice to get back on the winning track," said coach Michael Moynihan, whose team was coming off a 3-1 loss to Illinois State that ended its nine-game winning streak. "What I was pleased with was the quality of the goals, the intensity that we attacked with. We stayed pretty relentless. Green Bay is a team is very, very stingy, so that, to me, is very impressive." The scoresheet featured eight players, including the first career goal for freshman midfielder Vienna Behnke (Neenah), but Hagen was the focal point. With her 20th, 21st and 22nd goals of the season, Hagen moved into 10th place in NCAA Division I history with 89 career goals and passed the legendary Kristine Lilly (North Carolina, 1989 to '92) into 19th place in career points with 201. After Hagen's early goal, Helen Steinhauser triggered the surge with her third of the year in the 65th. Hagen added a penalty kick in the 66th and capped her hat trick in the 68th. The final three goals were scored by freshmen – Behnke in the 73rd, Morgan LaPlant (Madison La Follette) in the 80th and Kelsey Holbert in the 89th – as the Panthers enjoyed their best offensive output since an 8-0 win over Cleveland State on Oct. 9, 2009.
Up next: Horizon League tournament at Engelmann Stadium – Semifinals: Opponent TBA, 7 p.m. Nov. 4.
