The wins keep coming for the state's nationally ranked NCAA Division I women's soccer teams, Marquette and UW-Milwaukee – even without All-American forward Sarah Hagen missing from the Panthers' lineup for one game.
Meanwhile, UW-Green Bay continues to keep things close but struggle to find goals. Get all of this week's highlights in our weekly recap of the Golden Eagles, Panthers and the Phoenix.
Marquette (14-2-0, 7-1-0 Big East)
Friday: No. 9 Golden Eagles 3, Providence 0. Sophomore Kate Reigle (Brookfield East), senior sweeper Kerry McBride (Elm Grove/Milwaukee DSHA) and freshman forward Mary Luba (Shorewood) had goals as Marquette cruised past the Friars (4-7-4, 2-5-0) in a Big East Conference match at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles had a 27-2 advantage in shots and put 14 shots on frame as they remained unbeaten all-time in seven matches against Providence. Reigle finished a cross from sophomore defender Katie Hishmeh (Brookfield Central) with a header for her third goal of the season in the 16th, McBride doubled the lead with her first of the year off a free kick in the 34th and Luba capped the night with her third of the season on a strike from the middle of the box. Senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla stopped the only shot she faced, that coming in the 87th minute, for the shutout.
Sunday: No. 9 Golden Eagles 3, Connecticut 0. Kulla made four saves for her 40th career shutout and Marquette again dominated possession and pounced on mistakes in a convincing Big East win over the Huskies (6-6-2, 3-3-2) at Valley Fields. Sophomore forward Maegan Kelly put the Golden Eagles ahead in the 34th, intercepting an attempted clearance and scoring her team-best 12th goal of the year from 10 yards out – Marquette has won all 16 games in which she has scored in her career. Hishmeh scored her first collegiate goal in the 65th on a speculative shot from 40 yards out that UConn goalkeeper Jessica Dulski mishandled, and senior forward Lindsey Page wrapped up the Golden Eagles' sixth straight win by taking a pass from Kelly at the top of the box and scoring from 10 yards in the 88th. Marquette, which is unbeaten in its past 18 home matches (17-0-1), has had 17 players score this season.
Up next: at St. John's, 6 p.m. Friday; at Syracuse, noon Sunday.
UW-Green Bay (3-9-3, 1-4-1 Horizon)
Wednesday: Phoenix 0, Loyola (Ill.) 0. Senior keeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton Xavier) made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season as Green Bay and the Ramblers (4-7-3, 0-1-2) played out a scoreless draw in a Horizon League match at Santaga Stadium. "The tie doesn't hurt us," Phoenix coach Trevor Warren said. "Loyola is a team that has historically outplayed us, and we were able to play them straight up tonight. We defended well and we showed a lot of heart and a lot of grit. We just needed that last little pass or that last little through ball to get on the board." Loyola freshman keeper Monica Gonyo (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) made one save for her fifth clean sheet. Drusch is second in program history with 15 shutouts and trails only Barb Singer, who had 17½ from 1990 to '93 – the NCAA no longer recognizes partial shutouts.
Sunday: Wright State 1, Phoenix 0. Green Bay put four of its eight shots on frame, but Brooke McCurdy stopped them all for her fourth shutout of the season as the Raiders (6-6-2, 1-2-1) dealt the Phoenix their 11th shutout in 15 games. Senior forward Brittany Persaud scored the lone goal on a free kick in the 19th minute for Wright State, which ended a five-game winless streak and handed Green Bay its seventh 1-0 loss of the year. "We knew it would be a difficult game even though we were at home," said Warren, whose team continues to be without leading scorer Hekla Palmadottir due to injury. "Wright State has always been one of the top teams in our league, and they're a veteran team with a lot of great players, and I think that kind of showed in the first half." McCurdy made her final save in the 89th minute, sliding over to grab a shot by Green Bay freshman Hannah Kernen (Belleville/Sugar River) from close range on the left side. Drusch made one save in the first half before freshman Katy Pilarzyk (Madison Memorial) played the final 45 minutes – she didn't face any shots on goal.
Up next: at Youngstown State, noon Saturday.
UW-Milwaukee (13-1-0, 5-0-0 Horizon)
Wednesday: No. 12 Panthers 2, Valparaiso 0. Senior Keara Thompson set up freshman Kelsey Holbert's first collegiate goal just after halftime and added a late insurance goal as UWM – playing without senior forward Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) – beat the Crusaders (6-5-2, 2-1-0) in a Horizon match at Engelmann Stadium. Hagen missed the first game of her stellar career because she was at a U.S. Under-23 national team camp in Carson, Calif., but the Panthers kept on winning despite the absence of their leading scorer. "I was very pleased to come away with a victory," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "First half we didn't create as many chances as we would have like. In the second half we took over and had the lion's share of possession and had some good chances." With the match scoreless in the 47th minute, Thompson beat Valparaiso keeper Kristen Manski to a loose ball in the box and Holbert collected it and finished into the open net. A half hour later, freshman Kelly Lewers was fouled just outside the box and Thompson sent the ensuing free kick into the upper corner for her third goal of the year. Junior keeper Jamie Forbes finished with three saves in her seventh shutout of the season.
Sunday: No. 12 Panthers 3, Youngstown State 0. Hagen had a goal and an assist in her return, sophomore Krissy Dorre had her first collegiate goal and added an assist and Thompson had two more assists as UWM thumped the Penguins (3-8-2, 0-3-1) at Engelmann for its seventh consecutive victory. "I thought we played well and it was a pretty dominant performance," said Moynihan, whose team had a dominating 37-4 advantage in shots. "I thought the play was good and the passes were crisp. We scored some nice goals and I thought we could have had more." Hagen and Thompson set up senior Laurel Ragalie (Kenosha Bradford) for the opener in the ninth minute, and Thompson recorded her 11th assist of the year on Dorre's header in the 27th. Hagen finished off the scoring by running onto a through ball from Dorre and finishing off the breakaway with her 16th goal of the year. Nicole Klein made 12 of her 17 saves in the first half for Youngstown State and coach Will Lemke (Edgerton/UW-Rock County), while Forbes had two saves in her second straight clean sheet.
