College women

Conference play started well for city rivals Marquette and UW-Milwaukee in women's college action, but the Golden Eagles had a rough road trip to finish off the week.

Meanwhile, UW-Green Bay suffered a familiar fate not once, but twice on the weekend. Get all the highlights in our weekly recap of the Golden Eagles, Panthers and Phoenix.

MarquetteMarquette (8-2-0, 1-1-0 Big East)

Thursday: No. 8 Golden Eagles 3, Pittsburgh 0. Sophomore Maegan Kelly scored for the fourth straight game and added an assist, and senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla moved into a tie for third place in NCAA history with her 36th career shutout as Marquette powered past the Panthers (1-6-2) in a Big East Conference opener. Senior Lindsey Page and sophomore Kate Reigle (Brookfield East) had the other goals for the Golden Eagles, who won their 16th straight regular-season conference match. Kelly has a team-best nine goals on the season, and her 16 career goals put her in a tie for 10th in program history. Marquette outshot Pitt 18-4 and Kulla needed to make two saves to record her fourth clean sheet of the season.

Sunday: West Virginia 3, No. 8 Golden Eagles 1. Blake Miller and Kate Schwindel sent headers past Kulla in the 43rd and 46th minutes in Morgantown, W.Va., as the Mountaineers (6-3-0, 2-0-0) dealt Marquette its first regular-season Big East loss in 20 games since a 3-1 loss to No. 13 Rutgers on Oct. 2, 2009. Miller and Schwindel also both assisted Frances Silva's goal in the 82nd as West Virginia won its fourth straight. "A disappointing result and an incomplete performance by us," Golden Eagles coach Markus Roeders said. "Overall, WVU battled harder today and deserves the result. It is a reminder that every Big East game is a fight and being on the road is that much more difficult." Freshman Mary Luba (Shorewood) scored for Marquette in the 87th minute, while Kulla made a season-high five saves.

Up next: vs. DePaul, 7 p.m. Thursday; vs. No. 12 Notre Dame, 1 p.m. Sunday.

UW-Green BayUW-Green Bay (2-7-2, 0-2-0 Horizon)

Friday: Valparaiso 1, Phoenix 0. Junior Rachel Hoaglin scored in the second minute and sophomore Kristen Manski made two saves as the host Crusaders (4-3-1) won their Horizon League opener for the first time in their five years in the conference. Senior keeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton Xavier) stopped five shots for Green Bay, which is winless in its past six against Valparaiso (0-4-2) after winning the first eight meetings between the teams. "It's tough to lose the first conference match," said Phoenix coach Trevor Warren, whose team allowed a fourth-minute goal in last Sunday's 1-0 loss to Northern Iowa. "Valpo came out in the first 25 minutes and out-possessed us and put us under some pressure. We were able to get back into it toward halftime and it was more even in the second half, but we really need to concentrate more on the early parts of games."

Sunday: Western Illinois 1, Phoenix 0. Miranda Graham scored off a rebound in the 20th minute at Santaga Stadium as the Leathernecks (6-2-0) handed Green Bay its fifth consecutive loss – all by 1-0 scorelines. Incredibly, 13 of the Phoenix's 16 losses over the past two seasons have come by that score. Drusch stopped a shot by Western Illinois' Kellie Julius, but Graham was on the left doorstep and finished for her second goal of the season. Drusch finished with six saves and has 350 in her carer, two behind program record-holder Laura Sandt (1994 to '97). Three Wisconsin natives started for the Leathernecks – sophomores Amber Davis (Milton) and Jordan Spaciel (Waterford) and freshman Gina Scaffidi (Brookfield Central) – while junior Chrissy Campbell (Greendale) and sophomore Kristin Becker (Brookfield Central) came off the bench. Western Illinois coach Tony Guinn, who played at UW-Platteville and coached the Racine St. Catherine's boys and girls teams from 1990 to 2001.

Up next: vs. Cleveland State, noon Sunday.

UW-MilwaukeeUW-Milwaukee (8-1-0, 1-0-0 Horizon)

Friday: No. 17 Panthers 4, Cleveland State 0. Senior Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) opened and closed the scoring, and junior Helen Steinhauser had three assists as Milwaukee thumped the host Vikings (5-3-0) in a Horizon opener. Hagen scored on a header in the 23rd and slotted home a shot in the 58th, giving her 11 goals in nine matches this season and 78 in 74 career games. Freshman Emily Scott scored her first career goal on a header off a corner kick by Steinhauser in the 30th and senior Laurel Ragalie made it 3-0 in the 30th. Junior keeper Jamie Forbes stopped the only shot she faced for her fifth shutout. "I thought we played pretty well tonight," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "We had three goals by half and could have had a couple more. We were able to get everybody in, which was good, and everybody got to play significant minutes. We kept up the pace pretty well and got some nice goals."

Up next: vs. Western Illinois (nc), 7 p.m. Friday; vs. Detroit, 1 p.m. Sunday.
