Emily GerberSenior Emily Gerber (DeForest) added two more milestones to her remarkable college soccer career Friday night.

Gerber, the only player in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history to earn Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons, had a hat trick in a 5-1 win over visiting North Park (Ill.) to become UW-Whitewater's career leader in goals and points.

Both records Gerber broke were previously held by Wendy Scott (Madison La Follette), who starred for the Warhawks from 1999 to 2002. Gerber's total of 46 goals is one better than Scott's mark, while her 105 points are two more than Scott compiled.

Gerber, the only Whitewater player to be named WIAC Player of the Year, also holds the program records for most goals and points in a season – her 23 goals and 49 points in 2009 broke Scott's standards of 20 and 45 set in 2000 – and she's one of five Warhawks players to have scored four goals in a game.

  • UW-Oshkosh women's coach Erin Coppernoll (Oshkosh West/UW-Green Bay/UW-Stevens Point) earned her 100th career victory in the Titans' 8-0 rout of Fox Valley rival Lawrence on Sunday. Coppernoll has a 100-99-15 record in 12 seasons, the past eight at Oshkosh after stints at Ripon and North Park (Ill.).

Now on the sidelines

After a season with the Rochester Rhinos in the USL PRO League, JC Banks (Milwaukee Riverside) has returned to UW-Green Bay to finish his studies and will serve as a student assistant for the Phoenix this fall.

"I remember when I was here, previous players would come back and help out, so I'm looking forward to doing the same," Banks said in a news release. "Coming back to Green Bay, I think I can help out of a lot of young guys."

Banks, who had 35 goals and 18 assists in 78 matches for the Phoenix, was drafted by Toronto FC in the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft last winter and had several trials with Swedish clubs before signing with the Rhinos.

"Any time we can surround ourselves with winners like JC, it's a good thing," first-year Green Bay coach Kris Kelderman said. "He's a great example of what it takes to be successful at the next level in this game. He's going through a path a lot of our current players are hoping to go through after their college career. I think it's a really good thing that he's around us."

Banks' father, Jimmy, is a former U.S. national team defender who played in the 1990 World Cup and is a longtime coach in his native Milwaukee – he's in his 13th season as the men's coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering.

  • Pam Shipway, who ranks among the career leaders in games played at UW-Milwaukee, was named an assistant coach at Alverno.
  • Craig Mallace (UW-Milwaukee) is now the girls soccer coach at Hill-Murray High School in Maplewood, Minn.

Polling place

After a pair of one-goal victories last week, including a 1-0 double-overtime win over nationally ranked UW-Milwaukee, Marquette (7-1-0) moved up in all the national women's polls.

The Golden Eagles rose four spots to No. 8 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, jumped two places to seventh in the Our Game Magazine rankings, improved three spots to No. 9 in the Soccer America Top 25, zoomed up five places to No. 11 in the Soccer Times Top 25 and bumped up two spots to No. 13 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 rankings.

Milwaukee (7-1-0), which bounced back after the loss to Marquette by beating the University of Wisconsin 2-1 in overtime, fell three places to No. 17 in the NSCAA poll. But the Panthers remained No. 19 in the Soccer Times Top 25 and 29th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 rankings and moved up in two other polls, rising two spots to No. 17 in the Our Game rankings and jumping three places to No. 11 in the Soccer America Top 25.

UW (5-2-0) again was among the other teams receiving votes in the NSCAA poll and was listed among the "Teams to Keep an Eye On" from Our Game, and the Badgers remained 34th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings.

  • UW-Milwaukee continues to be the top team in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region rankings, while UW stood pat at No. 6 in the regional poll. Marquette, meanwhile, moved back atop the Northeast Region rankings, trading places with Notre Dame for the third straight week.
  • The only state men's team in Division I rankings is UW-Green Bay (2-1-1), which is 39th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 48.
  • UW-Parkside (2-0-0) checked in at No. 5 in the NSCAA Division II Midwest Region women's poll.
  • In Division III, UW-Oshkosh (2-1-1) fell nine places to No. 17 in the NSCAA men's poll and dropped to No. 3 in the North Region poll. UW-Superior (3-1-0) moved up a spot to No. 8 in the North Region despite suffering its first loss of the season, while Concordia (3-1-0) is ninth in the Central Region. Oshkosh also is 16th in the D3soccer.com Top 25 after starting the season ranked second in the country.
  • UW-Stevens Point (3-1-0) received votes in the NSCAA Division III women's poll and rose two places to No. 4 in the North Region poll. UW-Eau Claire (3-1-0) is sixth and St. Norbert (3-0-0) is 10th in the North, while Edgewood College (4-1-0) remains 10th in the Central Region poll.

Honor roll

Cal Poly senior goalkeeper Patrick McLain (Eau Claire Memorial) was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com men's National Team of the Week.

McLain made five saves as he posted two shutouts last week, as the Mustangs (2-1-2) beat Villanova 1-0 and tied then-No. 12 West Virginia 0-0. McLain has kept clean sheets in four of five matches this season and ranks 10th in NCAA Division I with a 0.35 goals-against average.

  • Marquette sophomore forward Maegan Kelly collected several accolades after scoring the game-winner against UWM and adding the equalizer in a 2-1 comeback win at Indiana, as she was named the Big East Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first time and earned spots on the Soccer America, TopDrawerSoccer.com and Our Game Magazine teams of the week.
  • Kelly's teammate, senior defender Kerry McBride (Elm Grove/Milwaukee DSHA), made the Big East Weekly Honor Roll. McBride anchored the Golden Eagles' defense against UWM and her free kick started the sequence that led to Kelly's winning goal with less than 2 minutes left in the second overtime.
  • Milwaukee standout senior forward Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) joined Kelly on the Our Game Magazine honor team. She scored both goals in the Panthers' win over UW, including the OT game-winner in the 97th minute.
  • Dubuque junior defender Ashley Barwick (Appleton Xavier) was the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's Defensive Player of the Week. She led a Spartans backline that allowed just three shots in shutout wins over Dominican, Grinnell and UW-Whitewater.
  • Junior forward Jessica Axt (Germantown), who scored four goals in Milwaukee School of Engineering's 6-0 win over Ripon last Thursday, was the Northern Athletics Conference women's Player of the Week. The men's winner was Wisconsin Lutheran freshman forward Jake Semmann (Grafton/Kettle Moraine Lutheran), who had two goals and an assist as the Warriors won both of their matches last week to even their record at 2-2-0.
  • UW-Stevens Point junior forward Sammy Greer (Hartford) was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three times in two matches – including goals in the opening minute of the Pointers' victories over Luther (Iowa) and then-No. 11 Carleton (Minn.). The defensive honoree was UW-Eau Claire sophomore keeper Nina Behrenbrinker, who stopped seven of eight shots in road wins over St. Benedict (Minn.) and Augsburg (Minn.).
  • The WIAC men's Defensive Player of the Week was UW-Oshkosh senior goalkeeper James Pike (Wauwatosa West), who made three saves in a 1-1 draw with then-No. 20 North Park (Ill.). UW-Superior's Alberto Rivero, a sophomore midfielder from Spain, claimed the offensive honor after his first goal of the season was enough to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Saturday.
  • Ripon junior keeper Adam Haefner (Mequon Homestead) was the Midwest Conference men's Defensive Player of the Week after stopping all 15 shots he faced  in 290 scoreless minutes, posting shutouts of Wisconsin Lutheran, Edgewood College and Concordia (Ill.).

Stat pack

Two of Milwaukee's finest are among the NCAA Division I leaders in goals: UWM's Hagen is tied for third with nine and Marquette's Kelly is tied for eighth with eight goals. ... UW-Green Bay junior Ryan Wehking is tied for sixth in the country with an average of seven saves per game.
