The Marquette and UW-Milwaukee women's teams went right to the final moments of double overtime before a winner was decided in a nationally televised match, and both sides geared up for the start of conference play with victories on Sunday.
UW-Green Bay, meanwhile, played two more matches that ended with a common, and frustrating, scoreline. Get all the highlights in our weekly recap of the Golden Eagles, Panthers and Phoenix.
Marquette (7-1-0)
Wednesday: No. 12 Golden Eagles 1, No. 14 UW-Milwaukee 0 (2OT). Sophomore forward Maegan Kelly scored in the 109th minute and senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla made her 35th career shutout as Marquette handed the Panthers (6-1-0) their first loss. A record crowd at Engelmann Stadium and a national television audience on Fox Soccer saw the Golden Eagles dominate play throughout as they tied the all-time series 7-7-6. It was the 10th one-goal game between the city rivals and the eighth time the teams have gone into overtime. Kelly ran onto a ball from senior forward Lindsey Page on the left side, headed it down just outside the box and chipped a shot over Forbes for her seventh goal of the season and third game-winner. Marquette put 11 of its 19 shots on goal, but couldn't solve Forbes until the final moments. Kulla, meanwhile, made one save to move into fifth place on the NCAA career shutout list.
Sunday: No. 12 Golden Eagles 2, Indiana 1. Marquette fell behind in the opening minute of its final tuneup before Big East Conference play, but got goals from Kelly and fellow sophomore Taylor Madigan (Waunakee) as they battled past the Hoosiers (4-3-1) in Bloomington, Ind. Orianica Velasquez gave Indiana the stunning early lead, converting off a through ball from Carly Samp just 37 seconds in after the Golden Eagles couldn't clear the ball out of their end. Kelly took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Hoosiers to equalize in the eighth minute, scoring for the third straight game and lifting her season total to eight. Madigan netted what proved to be the game-winner in the 63rd, finishing off a cross from Vanessa Legault-Cordisco just two minutes after re-entering the match. "We didn't play our best today, but we rallied and prevailed at the end," coach Markus Roeders said after his 225th career victory. "It is a long season, at times what needs to happen is to grind it out and that's what we did today."
Up next: vs. Pittsburgh, 7:05 p.m. Thursday (Big East opener); at West Virginia, noon Sunday.
UW-Green Bay (2-5-2)
Friday: South Dakota State 1, Phoenix 0. Sophomore Abby Jurgens scored her first goal of the year in the 83rd minute in Brookings, S.D., as the Jackrabbits (3-4-0) dealt Green Bay another 1-0 loss. "Our defense played hard once again and kept us in it for a long time, but we're still not putting away our chances," said Phoenix coach Trevor Warren, whose team was outshot 17-7 and had just one shot on goal. Sierra Valentine (Green Bay Notre Dame) was denied by South Dakota State keeper Kat Donovan in the 61st, and fellow freshman Ellen Joppe (Bay Port) shot wide in the 86th on Green Bay's final chance.
Sunday: Northern Iowa 1, Phoenix 0. In what has become a familiar refrain, Kiki McClellan's fourth-minute goal in Cedar Falls, Iowa, was enough for the Panthers to end a three-game winless streak and send Green Bay to its third consecutive 1-0 loss and fourth of the season. The Phoenix outshot Northern Iowa 13-8, but sophomore keeper Erin Zaideman stopped all five shots on goal as Green Bay was shut out for the sixth time in nine matches and saw its scoreless streak reach 290 minutes. Sophomore defender Grace Schield (Middleton) had two shots for the Panthers.
Up next: at Valparaiso, 4 p.m. Friday (Horizon opener); vs. Western Illinois, 2 p.m. Sunday.
UW-Milwaukee (7-1-0)
Wednesday: No. 12 Marquette 1, No. 14 Panthers 0 (2OT). Forbes turned in another tremendous performance in goal with nine saves and senior defender Mary Wandowlowski cleared a shot off the line in the 94th minute, but the Golden Eagles (6-1-0) broke through on Kelly's chip with 69 seconds left in the second overtime. "We didn't quite get it done, but I think there is a lot we can build from," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "We have a lot of youth and the season is a process. We're building, and to play the 12th-ranked team in the country and take it down to 1:09 says something." The crowd of 2,212 shattered the program record for home attendance, easily beating the 1,309 that took in the teams' meeting back in 2009.
Sunday: No. 14 Panthers 2, Wisconsin 1 (OT). Match recap.
Up next: at Cleveland State, 6 p.m. Friday (Horizon opener).
