All in all, it was a pretty good second weekend of action for the Marquette, UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee women's soccer teams.
Get all the highlights in our weekly recap of the Golden Eagles, Phoenix and Panthers.
Marquette (4-0-0)
Friday: MKE Cup – No. 12 Golden Eagles 5, Saint Louis 0. After scoring just two goals in their first two matches, the Golden Eagles broke loose against the Billikens (1-1-0) at Valley Fields. Senior forwards Rachael Sloan and Lindsey Page, sophomores Taylor Madigan (Waunakee) and Cara Jacobson (Shorewood) and freshman midfielder Mary Luba (Shorewood) all found the back of the net in a convincing display that saw Marquette outshoot Saint Louis 15-2 and put a dozen shots on frame. Junior midfielder Britney Scott had three assists, while senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla made one save in 61 minutes before redshirt freshman Sofie Schunk logged the final 29 minutes in her collegiate debut.
Sunday: MKE Cup – No. 12 Golden Eagles 2, Long Beach State 1. Junior midfielder Lisa Philbin took a pass from Sloan and scored from 17 yards out in the 68th minute, snapping a tie as Marquette tipped the 49ers (2-2-0) at Valley Fields and won its MKE Cup for the first time since 2006. The Golden Eagles and UW-Milwaukee both won twice in the event, and Marquette was awarded the championship on goal differential (plus-6 to the Panthers' plus-4). Sophomore Maegan Kelly put the Golden Eagles ahead in the fifth minute, but Long Beach pulled even in the 40th when Nadia Link headed Alex Balcer's free kick past Kulla – it was the first goal allowed by Marquette this season. Junior Ally Miller (Mequon Homestead) was named MVP of the MKE Cup, while Kulla, Sloan, Page and Philbin were named to the all-tournament team. "She just thrives under pressure," Phoenix coach Trevor Warren said of Drusch. "I think there's ice water going through her veins." The program record for shutouts is 17.5 by Barb Singer (1990 to '93). Green Bay's best chance to score came in the 43rd, when Iowa State keeper Maddie Jobe made a fingertip save to keep out a shot by Phoenix sophomore forward Hekla Palmadottir.

UW-Milwaukee (4-0-0)
Friday: MKE Cup – Panthers 3, Long Beach State 2. Midfielder Keara Thompson scored from the top of the box in the 80th minute to snap a tie and give UWM its third consecutive one-goal victory to start the season. "This was a fantastic game. I thought we put on a good show, two teams that were even and well-matched," Panthers coach Michael Moynihan said. "I like the style that (LBSU) plays. They like to build it up and knock it around, which we like to do as well." Senior standout Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) scored the first two goals for UWM in the match at Engelmann Stadium, as she equalized for the Panthers in the 16th on a header off a cross from Thompson, then drew and converted a penalty kick in the 37th to put UWM in front. Thompson's winner came 9 minutes after the 49ers (2-1-0) tied it up.
Sunday: MKE Cup – Panthers 3, Saint Louis 0. Kelly Lewers, senior forward Laurel Ragalie (Kenosha Bradford) and Hagen all scored in the final half hour as the Panthers surged past the Billikens (1-2-0) at Engelmann Stadium. Lewers opened the scoring for the second straight Sunday, finishing off a pass from fellow freshman Morgan LaPlant (Madison La Follette) in the 65th minute before Ragalie and Hagen added insurance goals in the 83rd and 87th minutes for UWM, which owned a 24-9 advantage in shots. "It was a nice finish with a couple goals in the late stage of the game," said Moynihan, who saw junior Jamie Forbes make four saves in the shutout. Hagen, who has five goals in four matches on the season, was named to the all-tournament team along with Thompson and and freshman midfielder Kelsey Holbert.
