College men

It was a frustrating opening weekend for the Marquette and UW-Milwaukee men's soccer teams, as the city rivals both took losses to kick off the season.

Meanwhile, UW-Green Bay and new coach Kris Kelderman are still preparing for their first matches, coming up this week.

Get all the highlights in our weekly recap of the Golden Eagles, Panthers and Phoenix.

MarquetteMarquette (0-1-0)

Saturday: Illinois-Chicago 2, Golden Eagles 1. A promising season got off to a disappointing start for Marquette, as the host Flames scored twice in three minutes midway through the second half and held on to win the season opener. Ned Pavlovic stepped in front of a pass and scored from 30 yards out, catching Golden Eagles goalkeeper David Check (Mequon Homestead) off his line in the 58th minute. Then in the 60th, Joe Radice took a feed from Jesus Torres on the left side of the box, worked around a defender and beat Check with a shot to the far post. Marquette, which was playing without senior starters Calum Mallace and Michael Alfano due to injury, saw three balls cleared off the line by UIC defenders in the second half before 6-foot-7 Swedish freshman defender Axel Sjoberg finished off a cross from junior midfielder Ryan Robb with a header in the 88th. In a strange sequence in the 53rd minute, the Flames were awarded and converted a penalty kick, but the referee waved off the goal because a UIC had entered the penalty box too early, then awarded possession to the Golden Eagles rather than allowing the penalty to be re-taken, as is dictated in both FIFA and NCAA rules.

Friday: Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 4, Panthers 1. Haitian forward Max Touloute had a hat trick and assisted on his team's other goal as the Mastodons surged past UWM at Englemann Stadium. The Panthers had a 20-8 advantage in shots, including 10-6 in shots on goal, but were foiled by IPFW keeper Ryan Bristol, a transfer from Indiana who made nine saves. Freshman midfielder Laurie Bell, who played in the youth setup at Manchester City and Rochdale in his native England, equalized in the 48th minute of his UWM debut, putting in the rebound of a shot by senior Robert Refai that Bristol saved. Touloute, though, put IPFW ahead for good in the 63rd, set up Colin Helmrich's goal in the 77th and capped his hat trick in the 79th. "It's obviously never great to lose and it was a convincing loss today in the end," Panthers coach Chris Whalley said. "I know it's cliche to say, but I don't think it was a 4-1 game. I thought we dominated the game and at 1-1 when we came back and scored in the second half, we missed a couple of chances and we were punished." The hard-fought match included 42 fouls, 24 by UWM, and five yellow cards for each side.

Up next: Panther Invitational at Engelmann Stadium – vs. Western Illinois, 7:30 p.m. Friday; vs. Western Michigan, 3 p.m. Sunday.
