Joey Chiappetta, a New Berlin native who played at Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School, prepared for his sophomore season at Lipscomb by spending six weeks at Centro de Formacion de Futbolistas de Alto Rendimiento – CEFAR – in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He agreed to write a journal for Wisconsin Soccer Central about his experiences at the academy, where he trained alongside mainly professional players.
Here's Chiappetta's final update before heading back to school in Nashville, Tenn.:
Wednesday, July 27
Morning: Worked upper- and lower-body weights and did an ab workout while trying to recover from a flare-up in my right hip.
Afternoon: Was able to do some touches on the ball for a bit before going and doing an upper- and lower-body workout with some ab work in between.
Thursday, July 28
Morning: Played rugby and soccer with a rugby ball to warm up before playing 7v3 possession. We then ran some before stretching and cooling down.
Afternoon: Warmed up with some skill before doing 20 minutes of gym work. We then played a 4v2v2 to goal. A group of four would possess the ball around two players. When the coach said "attack," the four players would then go and attack two new players and a goalkeeper.
Friday, July 29
Warmed up with some touches and a little speed and agility before getting to play 60 minutes against Deportivo Alem, a Third Division team. We began playing a 5-3-2 where the two outside backs would move up almost as outside forwards and the two attacking midfielders would become outside midfielders. I played the defensive center mid, which forced me to play in the center and control the game as much as I could. We kept this formation for 25 minutes until switching to a classic 4-4-2 with me still in the center for 20 minutes. We concluded the last 15 minutes with a 3-5-2 with me on the outside right midfielder. During the game I strained my lower back and was unable to do anything but rest and rehab for the next few days.
Tuesday, August 2
Afternoon: Was able to do some back exercises before playing some soccer tennis before packing up and heading back to the United States.
The flight time from Buenos Aires to Dallas was 11 hours, with a two-hour wait through customs and a two-hour flight back to Milwaukee totaling 15 hours.
Looking at the last six weeks, I was able to work on speed of play, decision-making and physical strength and speed. This has been a valuable experience preparing for the college season.
