Joey ChiappettaJoey Chiappetta, a New Berlin native who played at Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School, is preparing for his sophomore season at Lipscomb by spending time at Centro de Formacion de Futbolistas de Alto Rendimiento – CEFAR – in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He's agreed to write a journal for Wisconsin Soccer Central about his experiences at the academy, where he's training alongside mainly professional players. Here's the latest from Chiappetta:

Saturday, July 9

Warmed up today with passing drills and big possession before playing soccer tennis with Group A. Half of us then went to the gym to do a full upper-body work out while the other half played Colegiales, a top Third Division team. After working out, our group went to do six speed and agility drills. We then went and played a 30-minute half game. I got in for the entire second half of the game against a mix of substitutes and starters.

Sunday, July 10

Warmed up with possession and passing drills and started running over different ball movements in our 4-4-2 system before scrimmaging against the Barcelona Under-17 team. Our system is considered a 4-4-2 but could be called a 4-2-2-2 with two more defensive central midfielders and two high wingers.

Monday, July 11

Morning: Warmed up with possession before doing a giant speed and agility drill. We then played 6v3 with three groups and switching those in the middle through the groups. We cooled down with 100-, 200-, 300- and 400-meter runs.

Afternoon: We warmed up with some different touches on the ball and shuttle passing before playing a 1v1 type drill where one person has the ball and one doesn’t. The one with the ball must keep it by passing with the four people on the outside and getting the ball back. People on the outside have two touches. We finished up with 100-meter sprints.

Tuesday, July 12

Morning: Played possession for a while then went over team tactics for our game tomorrow. We then concluded with light jogs.

Afternoon: We warmed up with some skills before doing three speed and agility drills. We concluded with the same 1v1 game.

Wednesday, July 13

Morning: Went to the gym to work on the upper body and abs. Then warmed up a little before playing 45 minutes against the reserve team of a Fourth Division team.

Afternoon: Worked the entire body for two hours in the gym before doing 20 minutes of light jogging.

Thursday, July 14

Morning: Warmed up with some possession and passing drills before playing a 3v3 recovery game to two goals. Cooled down with some light jogging.

Afternoon: Played possession games and some skill before doing some light jogging.

Friday, July 15

Morning: Warmed up with possession before doing four different stations. Stations 1 and 2 – 5v3 possession drills. Two teams of three and two neutrals. When you lose the ball, your team is in the middle. Station 3 – 1v1 recovery game. Station 4 – Four different speed and agility drills.

Afternoon: Played a little possession and did some skill work and then went and lifted weights for the entire body.

Saturday, July 16

Warmed up with some stationary speed and agility drills before going to lift weights that involved working both lower and upper body as well as a little bit of ab work. After lifting we went to play 6v6. The first game we played was scoring on one goal and defending one goal. The second game was scoring on two goals and defending two different goals. The final game was scoring on four goals when you had possession of the ball and defending the same four goals when you didn't have the ball. We cooled down with a light jog and stretching.

Sunday, July 17

Warmed up with some possession and passing before playing a 5v5 recovery game. Light practice day.

On a side note, Argentina lost 5-4 on penalty kicks to Uruguay in the Copa America quarterfinals. Brazil lost to Paraguay on penalty kicks, too – Brazil missed their first four penalty kicks. They didn’t have a chance to miss their fifth. The loss by Argentina could signal a tough week ahead. The mood here is depressed.
