Joey ChiappettaJoey Chiappetta, a New Berlin native who played at Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School, is preparing for his sophomore season at Lipscomb by spending time at Centro de Formacion de Futbolistas de Alto Rendimiento – CEFAR – in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He's agreed to write a journal for Wisconsin Soccer Central about his experiences at the academy, where he's training alongside mainly professional players. Here's the latest from Chiappetta:

Sunday, July 3

Morning: We played a game today against the 94 FC Barcelona kids with special guests of an agent from Diego Maradona's agency who stopped by for a bit to watch us as well as the president of FC Barcelona. We drew the kids 2-2. The formation was a simple 4-3-3 but the outside backs are in charge of playing like outside midfielders when we have the ball. I played defensive midfielder and was in charge of switching the ball from one side to the other. I was instructed when the ball started on one side, it must finish on the other side. It felt more like I was defending their entire midfield for this game with the other two midfielders in an offensive mode.

Monday, July 4

Had a fever and slept all day to rest up for the rest of the week.

Tuesday, July 5

Morning: Warmed up with 4v2s and then went into some different passing patterns in a passing drill. The second part of practice was four stations of speed and agility. We concluded practice with a 4v4 recovery game to a small goal with goalkeepers.

Afternoon: We started off with three different speed and agilities drills before playing 3v3, soccer tennis and 4v4.

Wednesday, July 6

Morning: Went to a club called Chacarita to do some training with a different coach for a little bit. Chacarita is a Second Division club but has a good youth program that plays in the First Division at younger levels. We warmed up with the giant possession game and different ways to control the ball with the head and a little with the feet. The group then went into a scrimmage and I was able to play about 20 of the 30 minutes at the attacking midfielder position.

Afternoon: Warmed up with some fun games that involved the ball before playing a giant game of 6v6 to goal.

Thursday, July 7

Morning: Went back to Chacarita for a second day. We warmed up with the giant possession game again and then did five different speed and agility drills that involved defensive work. We finished with another scrimmage and this time I played the withdrawn forward for around 15 of 30 minutes.

Afternoon: Warmed up with similar games as yesterday before having a 3v3 soccer tennis tournament.

Friday, July 8

Morning: The CEFAR group B with a few group A players went to Club Atletico Fenix. They are a Fourth Division club about an hour away from CEFAR. We warmed up with the large possession game again and then went into eight different speed and agility drills before playing. I went into a game against the reserve team. We played a 4-4-2 but with a difference in the way we played. The two center midfielders were defensive and the outside midfielders would pinch in to play like attacking midfielders. I played on the right side for about 35 minutes before being subbed off for a bit and then played the defensive midfielder for 5 minutes.

Afternoon: We did 20 minutes of light jogging and walking before going to the gym and working on upper body for an hour.
