Joey Chiappetta, a New Berlin native who played at Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School, is preparing for his sophomore season at Lipscomb by spending time at Centro de Formacion de Futbolistas de Alto Rendimiento – CEFAR – in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He's agreed to write a journal for Wisconsin Soccer Central about his experiences at the academy, where he's training alongside mainly professional players. Here's a look at Chiappetta's first week:
Wednesday, June 22
Morning: Spent more than a day getting from my house to CEFAR. Once I arrived, I needed to file some paperwork for CEFAR and began training at 9:30 a.m. with the Group A, which was the top group at CEFAR. This group consisted of first-team professionals. The warm-up was a massive possession game with one touch on the outside and two to three people in the middle. If you turned the ball over, you and the person to your right and left had to go in the middle. If the outside completed 20 passes, the people in the middle were in for another time. I was then paired with another newer person to lift upper body weights. I then went and did 40-yard runs. I had 20 seconds to complete the run before a rest. We did 10 of these runs, rested, and then did 10 more runs.
Afternoon: We spent the afternoon doing sprints with and without the ball before playing 1v1 and stretching.
Thursday, June 23
Morning: Put into Group B, which contains players of 18 to 23 years old who are looking for a reserve team to play on. We began the morning with different passing drills that worked on accuracy of the pass and the weight of the pass, as well as soccer tennis. We then played a 4v4 recovery game before cooling down with 30-yard jogs. You began with a 12-second jog and 8-second rest and then moved into a 15-second jog and 15-second rest.
Afternoon: We warmed up with sprinting, push-ups and ab work before starting our speed and agility training at six different stations. We finished up the training with 2v2s and stretching.
Friday, June 24
Morning: Began warm-ups with passing juggling and some dribbling before we were split into 5 different stations.
-
Station 1 – Play 1v1 in a 20-yard by 5-yard grid. Goal is to hit the cone two yards off the end line.
-
Station 2 – 5v3 possession with four people on the outside and one in the middle.
-
Station 3 – Same as Station 2, however part of the drill is to have the people in the middle switch with those in the middle of Station 2.
-
Station 4 – Four separate speed and agility drills that involve a 3kg medicine ball
-
Station 5 – Sprint for 20 yards and back and rest 15 seconds.
We cooled down with a 30-yard jog and back and stretching.
Afternoon: We warmed up with some skills, then played 1v1 and finished with 4v4+1 possession
Saturday, June 25
The Internet is OK at best down here, so emails may be very rare. However, I am keeping up with the journal. Fun facts for you to ponder: I will copy the journal tomorrow while watching the second leg of the River Plate series. Yes, River Plate is playing a second division team in a relegation battle. They are down 2-0 going back to River Plate to play. River need to win by 3 goals, otherwise they will be demoted to the second division.
We warmed up with some skills before playing 1v1 and 2v2 then did different speed and agility drills. We then went to a 6v4 possession and a 5v5 to two goals game. We then concluded with some sprints and stretching.
Sunday, June 26
We began by warming up with different passing drills before scrimmaging the Barcelona kids in a 7v7 plus keepers small-sided game.
Monday, June 27
Morning: We warmed up with speed and agility drills that involved a ball and five cones. Then we worked on how a defense and midfield must defend to prevent a team from moving down the middle. We concluded with an 11v11 scrimmage possession game. We cooled down with a 12-minute slow jog.
Afternoon: We lifted in the gym for 40 minutes before playing 2v2 and a 4v4+1 possession.
Tuesday, June 28
Morning: We warmed up and then did three different speed and agility stations then played a 5v2 keep-away game before scrimmaging 10v10 in a small area.
Afternoon: We warmed up and then ran 20-, 30-, and 40-yard sprints. We then played a passing game that involved passing the ball through two cones from 10 yards away before playing 3v3 and 1v1 and then stretching.
River Plate got relegated and Buenos Aires is going crazy – half angry, half happy. I’m with group B and we play a game Wednesday, so that should be fun.
