Gabe GenovesiGabe Genovesi (Mequon Homestead) has gone from being a two-sport athlete to a one-sport athlete.

Genovesi recently left the Akron men's soccer program – which won the NCAA championship last season – and will instead focus on his career with the Zips' track and field team.

After redshirting as a freshman in soccer last fall, he played in some of the team's exhibition matches this spring.

"Late this spring, after some soul searching, I realized my heart is with track and field and that I hope to represent my country in the Olympics some day," Genovesi wrote in an email today.

He was the Gatorade Wisconsin Athlete of the Year for boys track and field last year after winning the 800 meters and anchoring two winning relay teams as the Highlanders won the team title at the WIAA Division 1 state meet last June.

"I am in the midst of transitioning from training for soccer to training for track," wrote Genovesi, who finished third in the 800 at the Mid-American Conference meet Saturday and has qualified for this summer's USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in the event.

Genovesi, an international business major at Akron's Honors College, is one of six potential returnees who have opted not to return to the soccer program next season. Zips coach Caleb Porter said all the players left on good terms, which certainly is the case with Genovesi.

"I cannot say enough about coach Porter and the UA men's soccer team for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of the team and for also supporting me in the UA men's track program," wrote Genovesi, whose father is legendary Milwaukee Wave player Michael King.

"I also cannot say enough about coach (Dennis) Mitchell and coach (Lee) LaBadie of the UA track program in allowing me the opportunity to run."

  • The UW-Oshkosh men's team left Monday for an 11-day trip to the Netherlands, the homeland of coach Wytse Molenaar. The Titans, who advanced to the NCAA Division III national semifinals last fall, will face amateur clubs VV Zeerobben, VV Minnertsga and Achilles 1894 and an Under-19 side from FC Groningen, which plays in the top-level Eredivisie. A visit to Molenaar's hometown of Harlingen and a two-day sailing trip on the Wadden Sea are on the team's itinerary before returning May 27.
  • Jack Borski (Madison West) was the men's recipient of this year's John Taylor Scholar-Athlete Award at UW-Oshkosh. The award is presented to one male and one female senior letterwinner who succeed in athletics and also embrace the ideals of team contribution, scholastic endeavor and school and community involvement. Borski, a geology major, has a 3.79 GPA and was a third-team NCAA Division III All-American defender last fall. He also was last year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer and a second-team selection on the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division team. He finished his career with one goal and 11 assists in 73 games (72 starts).
  • Keenan Flynn (Marquette), who completed his career with the Golden Eagles last fall, was named goalkeepers coach at Division I Wright State. The Flyers' coach is Milwaukee native Bryan Davis (UW). Flynn made five appearances during his time at Marquette.
