Edgewood CollegeIt took a while, but the Edgewood College women's soccer team finally figured out a way past Callie Hasselbring.

Sophomore midfielder Brianna Franken (De Pere) broke a scoreless tie with a penalty kick in the 84th minute and freshman Megan Falk (Oakfield) added an insurance goal less than a minute later as the Eagles posted a 2-0 victory over Hasselbring and Concordia (Ill.) in a Northern Athletics Conference match Saturday afternoon in River Forest, Ill.

Hasselbring had five saves and saw a teammate clear another ball off the line as the Cougars (6-6-0 overall, 2-6-0 NAC) held Edgewood (8-4-1, 5-2-1) at bay for most of the day. But a foul by Concordia's Kelly Engelking gave Franken a chance from the spot and she didn't disappoint, scoring her second goal of the season.

Falk then scored her second goal 49 seconds later off a pass from fellow freshman Emily Dorsett (Winneconne) to seal the victory for the Eagles. Junior goalkeeper Kristi Frisch (McFarland) stopped three shots for her fourth shutout of the year and the 11th of her career.

Franken also set up Edgewood's other goal during the week. Junior forward Kristina Santaga (Green Bay Notre Dame) gave the Eagles the lead in an NAC match against Concordia (Wis.) on Tuesday, but the Falcons (6-5-0, 6-2-0) rallied for a 2-1 victory in Mequon.

Santaga's fifth goal of the season and third in two games came in the 18th minute and Edgewood remained in front until sophomore Ashley Apazeller (West Bend West), a transfer from UW-Milwaukee, equalized in the 64th minute with her third goal of the year.

Just more than seven minutes later, Frisch saved but couldn't hold a shot by junior midfielder Lauren Straehler (Kettle Moraine) and senior midfielder Kelli Wittenberg (Union Grove) swooped in to score her fifth of the season and give the Falcons their third win over the Eagles in the teams' past seven meetings.

Frisch finished with seven saves, while junior Samantha Anacker (Janesville Parker) stopped six shots for Concordia.

Men

Freshman Jake Overman (Waupaca) snapped a tie with his first collegiate goal 19 seconds before halftime as the Eagles (5-5-3, 3-3-1) got past Concordia (Ill.) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The host Cougars (1-12-0, 0-7-0) took the lead through Kyle Joss in the 17th minute, but freshman midfielder Sam Quinones (Oconomowoc) answered with his third of the season four minutes to quickly pull Edgewood level.

Overman came off the bench and subbed in for Quinones a few minutes later and ended up scoring the game-winner off a pass from fellow freshman Kelmend Isaj (Monroe).

Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Huss (Germantown) made two saves for his first shutout of the season and the second of his career. The only shot Concordia put on frame in the second half was a header off a corner kick in the final minute that Huss grabbed to seal the victory.

The Eagles were coming off a 3-0 loss to Marian on Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field.

Sophomore forward David Reinke (McFarland) curled in a free kick from 22 yards out for his team-best sixth goal of the season in the 24th minute to open the scoring for the Sabres (3-8-1, 3-3-0), and senior midfielder Luke Peltonen (Fond du Lac) scored the first two goals of his career on 20-yard blasts in the 32nd and 77th minutes.

Marian sophomore keeper Nathan Thiery (Hartford) made four saves for his first clean sheet of the year. Senior Kyle Koenig (Sheboygan North) had two saves in the first half and freshman Matt Dammen (Sun Prairie) stopped three of four shots in the second half for Edgewood.
