After giving up four goals in its first four matches of the season, the Edgewood College women's soccer team yielded three in the opening 10 minutes Sunday and lost to St. Norbert 3-1 in a non-conference game in De Pere.
Freshman Katie Vanden Avond (De Pere), who scored seven of the Green Knights' nine goals in their first two games, had two assists in St. Norbert's early outburst.
Erin McQuinn scored off a corner kick by fellow sophomore Zoe Kurth in the second minute, and Vanden Avond set up senior Katherine Larson (Green Bay Notre Dame) in the fourth and sophomore Kellan Zimmer (Kimberly) in the 10th as the Green Knights improved to 3-0-0 for the first time since 2002.
Molly Haertle got the Eagles (4-1-0) got on the board with her second goal of the season in the 50th, with fellow junior Kristina Santaga (Green Bay Notre Dame) collecting the assist in a return to her home area, but Edgewood managed only seven shots on the day and four on goal.
Santaga picked up her first two goals of the season Saturday in the Eagles' 6-1 rout of host Ripon (0-4-0), a match that saw sophomores Zenaida Cordova, Katie Pampuch (Oconomowoc) and Sophie Rodriguez (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) score their first goals of the season.
Edgewood opened Northern Athletics Conference play Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over shorthanded Wisconsin Lutheran at Breese Stevens Field.
Junior forward Elaine Gerry (Sauk Prairie) scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season and freshman Emily Berns (Lake Mills) added her first for the Eagles, all in the opening 19 minutes.
Edgewood had a 28-1 advantage in shots and 16-0 in corner kicks against the Warriors (0-2-0, 0-1-0 NAC), who had only 10 players. Sophomore keeper Mel Lemke (Brookfield Central) made 13 saves for Wisconsin Lutheran.
Men
After being blanked in their past two matches and falling behind St. Norbert on Sunday afternoon, the Eagles stormed back for a 4-1 victory over the Green Knights (0-3-0) in De Pere.
Freshman Alexander Ribeiro (Green Bay Notre Dame) had a pair of assists for Edgewood (2-1-2), which trailed 1-0 after junior midfielder Sam Gordon (Milwaukee Pius) converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute.
Sophomore defender Evan Conrad (De Pere) scored his first career goal off a free kick in the 39th to tie it at 1, and the Eagles scored three times in a 13-minute span early in the second half to take charge.
Sophomore forward Andrew Aurit (Monroe) put Edgewood ahead in the 52nd, senior midfielder Matt Pampuch (Oconomowoc) extended the lead in the 56th and freshman Kelmend Isaj (Monroe) capped the surge with his team-best third of the season in the 65th.
The Eagles were coming off back-to-back shutouts.
They lost to Lake Forest (Ill.) 1-0 on Wednesday night, with sophomore forward Nick Kliminski (Waunakee) scoring his third goal in as many games for the Foresters (3-0-0) in the 44th minute. Edgewood was outshot 16-2 in the loss and didn't put a shot on goal.
On Saturday, senior keeper Kyle Koenig (Sheboygan South) made four saves for the Eagles and Ripon junior Adam Haefner (Mequon Homestead) stopped five shots as Edgewood and the host Red Hawks (1-2-1) played a 0-0 tie. Each team had one shot on goal in the two overtime periods.
