Four teams will celebrate state titles and earn berths in next summer's U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championships as the fall Wisconsin State Championships wrap up Sunday at UW-Oshkosh's Titan Stadium.
The four divisions for high school-aged girls teams play their State Championships, commonly known as the State Cup, in the fall because the WIAA season is in the spring when the rest of the tournament is contested.
This year's brackets look a little different, as FC Milwaukee no longer has its top-level "Blue" teams in the event.
Those Nationals teams are now playing exclusively in the Elite Clubs National League, and a team must play in a Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association league to be eligible to participate in the State Championships. Over the previous five years, FC Milwaukee Blue teams won 16 of the 20 fall titles.
The club entered its lower-level "White" teams in all four age groups and its Under-15 team advanced through group play to last Sunday's semifinals before being eliminated.
Perhaps the most compelling final is the Under-17 championship between the Appleton SC Goal Getters and North Shore United Blue at noon. It's a rematch of last fall's Under-16 final, which the Goal Getters won 1-0 in overtime. The North Shore side claimed the title in the Under-15 bracket in 2009 under the club's previous name, Cedarburg SC.
Both teams have won all their matches in this year's competition. North Shore has outscored opponents 43-0, racking up nine, 13 and 17 goals in group play before a 4-0 win over FC Green Bay Orange in the semifinals, while Appleton has yielded just one goal and scored 18 in their four games.
The Under-18 final features Kenosha's United FC Red, which qualified for the semifinals thanks to a tiebreaker in its group, against NEW United, a co-operative team of players from Appleton SC and FC Green Bay. Hartland club Lake Country United has teams in both the Under-15 and Under-16 championship games.
Sunday's winners qualify for the Region II Championships, which are June 23 to 27 in Saginaw, Mich.
