Kelsey Loupee scored in the 68th minute and goalkeeper Molly Polletto came up with several big saves as Colorado Rush Nike blanked FC Milwaukee 1-0 in an Under-18 girls opener Wednesday morning at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships at the Reach 11 Complex in Phoenix.
The Region II champion Nationals, who are looking to become the first Wisconsin team to win a U.S. Youth Soccer national title, put Polletto and the Rush backline under pressure throughout, but couldn't break through against the Region IV representatives.
FC Milwaukee faces Florida's Team Boca at 10 a.m. Thursday, with the losing team facing long odds to qualify for Sunday's national championship game.
Region III winner Team Boca took a 2-0 lead over Region I's FC Stars of Massachusetts in its opener, but gave up four unanswered goals and lost 4-2 in a wild match that saw all six goals scored before halftime.
Live scoring updates are available on the U.S. Youth Soccer website.
