Mary Luba snapped a tie in the 87th minute as the FC Milwaukee Under-18 girls team rallied past Kansas' KCFC Intensity 2-1 Tuesday morning to advance to the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championship at the USA Youth Sports Complex in Appleton.
The Nationals fell behind just two minutes into the semifinal match, but Jacie Jermier – a former McFarland High School standout – equalized in the 63rd. Both Luba and Jermier are headed to Marquette in the fall.
FC Milwaukee will play Mockingbird Premier (Kent.) for the regional title at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The winner advances to the national championships July 27 to 31 in Phoenix.
Mockingbird Premier has outscored three foes by a 12-1 margin after opening the tournament with a 2-2 tie against Chicago's Eclipse Select. Louisville recruit Casey Whitfield has scored the past six goals for the team, including both goals in a 2-0 win over St. Louis Scott Gallagher in the semifinals. Lucy Chauvin, a Butler recruit, has added three goals for Mockingbird.
Two other Wisconsin teams fell in the semifinals, both losing to sides from Chicago's Sockers FC.
The Milwaukee Bavarians' Under-15 boys team dropped a 1-0 decision, allowing the lone goal in the second half. In the girls Under-17 semifinals, the Sockers scored in the 30th and 37th minutes to take control and added a late goal to beat FC Milwaukee 3-0.
They advance to play the Minnesota Thunder Academy, whose roster includes defender Brianna Stelzer, a 2012 University of Wisconsin recruit. UW defender Catie Sessions is on the roster for Minnesota's Inferno, which will play Kansas' Mallorca in the girls Under-19 final.
