A pair of Wisconsin boys teams had a tough time at the prestigious Disney Soccer Showcase this week in Orlando, Fla., both finishing 0-2-1 in group play.
Elm Grove SC Premier pulled out a 1-1 draw against Maryland's Bethesda SC Gunners in Under-18/19 Copa Black Division play Wednesday. Jimmy Grunert (Muskego) scored the equalizer for Elm Grove off an assist from Evan Carlin (Wauwatosa West) with 10 seconds left in stoppage time.
The team, coached by UW-Milwaukee assistant Ben Shepherd and ranked 69th in the country, lost to Texas' Lonestar Red North 1-0 in its opener Tuesday and fell to Florida's CFK Kraze Black 4-2 in its finale Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Madison FC Gold Under-17 boys team tied Tennessee's Brentwood Premier 2-2 in its first match of the Predator Gray Division, then lost to FC Dallas Youth Premier 1-0 and Beachside of Connecticut 3-1. University of Wisconsin assistant Phil Presser coaches the Madison FC squad, which is ranked 67th nationally.
North Shore United's Under-17 team is the lone state side playing in the girls tournament, which kicks off Saturday. North Shore will take on Japan's JFA Academy Fukushima, New York's Albertson SC Elite Fury and North Carolina's Fusion Elite in the Showcase Red Division.
