Notre Dame recruit Patrick Hodan (Milwaukee Marquette) and UW-Green Bay recruit Cheenuj Shong (Milwaukee Ronald Reagan) scored Tuesday as FC Milwaukee's Under-17/18 team closed the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase with its first victory of the 2011-12 season, a 2-1 win over New Jersey's NJSA 04 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
Hodan scored his third goal of the season and second of the Showcase in the fourth minute and Shong added his second in the 59th to give the Nationals (1-4-0 overall) a 2-0 lead. NJSA 04, which had a player sent off in the second half, cut the deficit in half in the 67th but couldn't find an equalizer.
FC Milwaukee lost its first two matches in Florida. Shong and Logan Andryk (Milwaukee Marquette) scored in a 3-2 setback against FC Westchester (N.Y.) on Saturday, and goals by Hodan and Andryk weren't enough as Met Oval scored the final two goals in a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
The Nationals opened Central Conference play with a pair of losses in St. Louis, falling to Scott Gallagher Metro 3-1 on Nov. 19 and Scott Gallagher Missouri 4-2 on Nov. 20. Their next scheduled matches are in March.
The club's Under-15/16 side finished 0-2-1 at the Showcase and is 0-4-1 on the season, but closed out the 2011 portion of its schedule with a 1-1 tie against NJSA 04 on Tuesday. Max Karcher (Brookfield East) netted the equalizer in the 78th minute after the NJSA 04 goalkeeper was sent off.
FC Milwaukee dropped a 3-0 decision to FC Westchester on Saturday and lost to Met Oval 5-2 on Sunday. In that match, goals by Bernabe Barba (Milwaukee St. Anthony) and Nathan Steinert (Oshkosh West) in the 40th and 42nd minutes tied the score.
The younger Nationals team also was swept in St. Louis last month in its first games of the season, losing to Scott Gallagher Metro 2-1 and Scott Gallagher Missouri 8-0.
Super Y-League
The Chicago Fire Under-13 boys team, which included Kenosha's Michael Sachen and Fox Point's Jack Shaw, beat the Chicago Fire Juniors-Florida 1-0 in a consolation match Monday at the USL Super Y-League North American Finals in Brandon, Fla.
The Fire finished 2-1-0 in Group D, beating Coastal FC (Canada) 3-1 and the Brooklyn Knights (N.Y.) 1-0 after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Brandon FC Flames (Fla.) in their opener Friday. Statistics weren't available for all matches, but Sachen had two goals in the win over Coastal.
In Under-15 girls play, Mequon United went 1-1-1 in Group C action and dropped a 1-0 decision to Ocean City FC (N.J.) in a consolation match.
Mequon lost to Rage SC (Pa.) 2-0 on Friday, but Kristin Bronikowski scored in a 1-0 win over Thompson Okanagan FC (Canada) on Saturday and Sophie Foote's goal gave United a 1-1 tie with the MPS Lady Knights (Mass.) on Sunday.
