Substitutes Maxxwell Bauman and Roberto Escudero scored crucial goals in the 89th and 90th minutes Wednesday as California's Pateadores beat New Jersey's Players Development Academy 4-2 to claim a spot in Friday's Under-17/18 final at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week in Milwaukee.
Pateadores (19-13-2) will face FC Dallas (19-1-8) in the championship game at noon Friday at Marquette's Valley Fields. The match will be televised live on ESPNU and streamed on ESPN3.com.
The two late goals by Baumann and Escudero allowed Pateadores to tie the Dallas Texans atop Group 1 with seven points after three round-robin matches. The teams had the same goal differential, but the California side scored six goals compared to five for the Texas team, sending Pateadores (19-13-2) to the final.
Irvin Parra-Anaya had the first two goals for Pateadores. In a match that kicked off at the same time, the Texans beat the New York Red Bulls 3-0 and looked to be bound for the championship game before the stunning late turn of events.
Danny Garcia and Jonathan Top each scored their second goal of Finals Week and Bryan Leyva and Flavio Guzman added their first as FC Dallas extended its unbeaten streak to 26 matches (18-0-8) by beating Florida's Weston FC 4-1 to wrap up Group 2 with a 2-0-1 mark.
The team, coached by former Major League Soccer player Oscar Pareja, hasn't lost since a 2-1 setback against Texas Rush AJ Auxerre back on Sept. 26 in its second game of the season.
The other three Under-17/18 placement matches also are Friday, following the final. Pool play in the Under-15/16 competition concludes Thursday, with the championship and other placement games on Saturday. Schedule/results/standings
