The southeast Wisconsin soccer community has been in mourning in the past few weeks, with the passings of Bill Riche and Friedrich "Fritz" Weiler.
Riche, a longtime referee in the Milwaukee area, died Sunday at his home in Brown Deer. He was 60. Riche also was the referee assignor for the Milwaukee Kickers for many years and an instructor for referee courses.
Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 5 p.m. Friday at Uihlein Soccer Park, with a memorial service from 5 to 6 p.m. A memorial fund in Riche's name has been set up, with the Kickers accepting donations in his honor.
Weiler, a member of the Wisconsin Soccer Association Hall of Fame, died Dec. 30 at his home in Waukesha at the age of 61.
He was born in Germany, but immigrated to the U.S. in 1964 and graduated from Waukesha South High School in 1968. Weiler was a midfielder for Bavarian SC for 17 years, helping lead the team to numerous Wisconsin Adult Soccer Association Major League, Wisconsin Amateur Cup and Wisconsin Open Cup titles and the U.S. Soccer Federation National Amateur Championship in 1976. He was inducted into the WSA Hall of Fame in 2008.
