One team repeated at the Madison Soccer Association finals Friday night at Breese Stevens Field, while another came up just short.
Ryan Compty (Mukwonago/UW-Oshkosh) scored on a breakaway with approximately 10 minutes remaining as Team Paradigm edged the Madison Fire 2-1 to claim its second straight Division 1 championship – the teams played to the same result in last year's final, with an 85th-minute goal the difference on that night.
Kevin Fisher (Green Bay Southwest/Edgewood College) gave Paradigm (14-1-2) the lead a half hour into the match and it remained that way until Brett Ogorzalek equalized for the Fire (9-4-3) in about the 55th minute.
Compty, though, broke past a few defenders and finished off the breakaway and goalkeeper Kyle Dillman (Madison La Follette) made the slim lead stand up as Paradigm closed the season with its 11th consecutive win. The Fire were playing in the final for the seventh time in eight years; they've won four titles in that span.
The Wisconsin Wizards claimed the Division 2 title earlier in the evening, tipping defending champion Sharpshooters FC 2-1 in the championship game.
The Wizards (14-3-1) took the early lead before Charlie Wittleder tied it up in approximately the 17th minute for Sharpshooters (10-7-1), who won their first seven matches in the spring but lost their final five regular-season games. The winning goal came with about 15 minutes to go.
