Milwaukee BavariansIt was just one of those nights for the Milwaukee Bavarians.

They created chance after chance, but couldn't score a goal. They hit the post, shot wide, shot high, had a goal ruled out for being offside, missed from 1 yard out and saw Erie Admirals goalkeeper Danny Mudd make a couple of nice saves.

On the other end, meanwhile, the Admirals scored on nearly every shot they put on frame.

Canisius' Gavin Falconer had a pair of goals, and Erie scored four times in the final 23 minutes to post a 5-0 victory in the third-place match of the National Premier Soccer League Final Four on Friday night in Madison, Ala.

"Unbelieveable. I don't know what to tell you," said Bavarians coach Andreas Davi, whose team finished the season 8-4-2. "I'm so disappointed that we lost this game. If we play this team five times, we beat them four times."

Falconer opened the scoring in the 33rd minute on a 20-yard shot that took a deflection and got past UW-Milwaukee goalkeeper Bryce Boyd (Milwaukee Marquette).

The Bavarians came close to equalizing several times: Marquette midfielder Amilcar Herrera (Milwaukee Riverside) had a header bounce over the crossbar in the 37th, UW-Parkside forward Cyril Simmons hit the post in the 62nd and DePaul defender Mark Haas (Milwaukee Marquette) shot just wide minutes later.

Penn State-Behrend's Aaron Meehl got on the end of a free kick by Old Dominion's Shane Howard and headed past Boyd in the 67th to give the Admirals a 2-0 advantage, but Milwaukee came back with more chances. UW-Platteville's Mark Ciszewski (Germantown) had the ball in the net, but it was waved off for offside, and Mudd came up with a fine save on a free kick by Herrera in the 70th.

"We could still be playing and we wouldn't score," Davi said more than two hours after the match.

Falconer, Michael Blythe and Howard added late goals for Erie (12-2-1) pulled away.

"It was still a great trip. For the guys and for me it was great to have this competition," said Davi, whose team lost to Hollywood United 3-0 in Thursday's semifinals. "I'm disappointed, but my team played great in both games. I'm proud of this team."

  • NPSL team Rocket City United beat the NPSL All-Star team 3-1 following the third-place match. The All-Star team, which includes Hartford's Anthony Santaga (Green Bay Notre Dame) and North Carolina's Carlos McCrary from the Madison 56ers and Mountain State's Pedashoo Deneus of Eau Claire Aris, will play the Carolina Railhawks Under-20 team on Sunday in Raleigh, N.C., and the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League on Tuesday in Georgia.
