The Chicago Red Stars will look to cap their first season in the Women's Premier Soccer League by winning the title on their home field.
The Red Stars, a former Women's Professional Soccer club, are playing host to the WPSL National Championship this weekend at the Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.
Chicago (10-1-0), which has outscored opponents 43-4 overall and has won 10 in a row since losing their Midwest Conference North Division opener, has three players with state ties who play key roles.
Midfielder Kara Kabellis (UW) and defender Elise Weber (UW) are regulars for the Red Stars, as is UW-Milwaukee goalkeeper Jamie Forbes. Kabellis has four goals and three assists in 10 matches, Weber has played in all 11 games and Forbes has eight shutouts – including six in a row – and an assist.
They face Sunshine Conference champion Tampa Bay Hellenic (10-1-1) in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Saturday, following the first match between the Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (8-2-3) and the Orange County Waves (11-1-0).
The Breakers Reserves, an affiliate of the Boston Breakers of WPS, are looking to become the first team to win back-to-back WPSL titles. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
All three matches will be streamed live online on the Red Stars website and the league website.
